WTB: Nikon D90

I currently have a Nikon d80, and have read reviews about the D90 with it's new CMOS sensor. I'm on the border of thinking whether or not to upgrade, just for the sensor and Video recording capabilities. The upgrade would cost me like 600 bucks, and I could easily get a 720P digicam for that amount. Anyone been in the similar situation, what'd you choose?

if you are shooting professionally, get it; if not no need to upgrade. i have a D60 and it is MORE than enough for me. video is nice but not a necessity.

+1.

video is nice, but not a neccesity if you are looking to "shoot" pictures..

D80 and D90 are same that they are both mid-level cameras. If you want to "upgrade", upgrade to a FF and another basically the same camera with upgrades.

I am not familiar with Nikon gear, but if you have a canon.. you go.. Xsi/T1i --> 30/40/50D --> 5dMK3/1DMK3. same idea... D40/60--> d80/90 --> D300? (correct me if I'm wrong).

Invest your $600 on some nicer glasses, which do not really depreciate. Camera body drops rather quickly (especially for lower end DSLR models).

The kit lens the camera comes with performs just "enough" for most of users.

So, upgrade your lens man!

D5000 has alot of the capabilities of the D90 but not the price...check out that model before you upgrade to the D90

spend the money on lens and not on upgrading the body.

PNF is spot on. I got the 90, and while I love it, my pictures look the same as my D40! Its all about who is behind the camera too.

Get a couple good lenses first, then when you finally upgrade, you will really be able to take full advantage of the capabilities.

The D5000 is a great choice as mentioned above. It is not far off the D90 in terms of everyday performance.

Video? Haven't used it once yet. until they get it to where it can autofocus, it is tough to use. (unlike say the Canons)

The D80 to D90 is not enough to warrant the jump IMHO.

Really!?

You havent used it that function!?!? Should actually record something and then see it on your LCD and see if it is really good.

But I think cwhite mentioned a key point that a few of my friends also mentioned. the video recording on the T1i (not sure on D90) and also the 5D MK II do not have auto focus and if you switch from short distance recording to long distance or vice versa, you need to stop it, and then record again so that it focuses.

But regardless, if you want to "take photo", leave the video recording job to real camcorders.
