EDIT: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...8&postcount=84 I was happy when I found this. My car warranty was going to be up a couple k before my oil change was to be due. I drive almost pure freeway, and it was calculating something around 25k between changes. I started on occasion using DS mode, and now my mileage is marginally worse and my oil change indicator has adjusted back to within warranty. I'll do an in between change, too. I just don't want to not get my free service.

its definitely NOT a sensor that performs its own oil analysis. its just a countdown meter to remind ppl of maintaining their vehicle, and to bring it in for service. Not everyone writes down when they get their oil changed, tires rotated, a/c filter, etc.

crazed792 refers to a 2005 document on a different engine. Some new technological developments have been done since.
The oil level/oil temp combo sensor measures the density and conductivity (high metal content) of the engine oil thus enabling Condition Based Servicing. While the oil sensor is one of the main inputs there are a few more such as average fuel consumption, time, number of cold starts, ambient temp and engine load adaptation.

there is no sensor which detects metal particles mate, oil samples have to be sent off to check for that.

I don't know if its a sensor or a timer, but my OBC called for an oil change when the odometer hit 11,707 miles in my 335d.....seems like a strange mileage/km number if it is a timer.

It constantly adjusts. IMO..BMW would've been better off just using a 'ding' saying oil change due in next 1k miles. The counter, because it fluctuates based upon driving environment, makes people OC.

See enclosed document. IMO It's a sensor, not a countdown.

That oil is presumably gone after the first dealer oil change and replaced with LL-04 oil thereafter right?
