Extending my warranty for another 2 YEARS...IS IT WORTH IT??
Hey guys! I drive a 2007 E92 335i. And I got 65000km on my car right now. I bought it 2 weeks ago. And I was thinking of extending my warranty for 2 more years, because I'm planning to keep it for at least 2.5 years. My original warranty(4 years or 80000km) will be expiring in May 2011.
So I phoned up a BMW dealership here in Vancouver Canada and asked for a quote. And there asking $2,100(additional 2 years/40000km on top of my original warranty). That's bumper to bumper warranty except the navigation. If I want the navigation included, it's $1,000 more. So if I purchase the extended warranty, my car will be under warranty until May 2013 or 120,000km. I know it gets pretty expensive to fix this kind of car. So do you thinks its all worth it to get the 2 years extended warranty?? I need your input on this guys. Thanks. |

YES and YES. Does it have a deductable like the CPO warranties do? Per visit?
But with these cars just ONE issue can run you into the thousands easily, and with a 335i that is the most common vehicle to have issues occur to it, according to this website

^^ wow that is ALOT, I pay $50 for each visit and not just per item.
But that is BMWs official CPO warranty, so others differ I am sure, but back to getting a warranty , YES do it, I would shop around though. Do a search on this site, I think there are others who have asked the same question and some companies were listed.

I am in the same shoes.. I should call my local BMW and get a quote to compare numbers with you. I know when i bought my car i asked about extended warranties. I remember them telling me that depending on how much deductible i wanted to pay, the cost would change.
IE. I wanted a $0 deductible, i would have to pay $2700 If i wanted a $100 deductible, i would have to bay $2400 You see what i am getting at ? I think it all depends on how much deductible you want to pay.

Is this a CPO warranty or are they just selling a 3rd party product?

Honestly, how often has the warranty really been used? I mean, to the $2700 limit, for example?
I have to believe that the odds are that you'll come out ahead if you just bank that $2700 as a repair fund. This is how insurance companies make money--they figure out the real odds that they will have to pay out, and charge more than that.

if you dont buy it you will have problems and if you do buy it (maybe but unlikely) u wont have problems. 2700 can disappear quickly if there is a problem. 300 is a pretty chunky deductible though imo.

For $2000 you can get a fuel pump and two turbos with labor...I would keep the money and pay as I go...

The three issues that have just returned are something I've been dealing with for a long time now, having brought the car in many, many times for them and even involving a BMW RTE to come inspect the car. It seemed they were finally resolved as of a few months ago, but I guess the car was just waiting to come out of warranty. They are: - harsh trans re-engagement after braking / NIC that refuses to go away with programming and software updates. - failing brake booster (i.e. stiff pedal overnight), I'm now on my fourth booster. - iDrive/audio/SOS crashing and freezing completely on start-up. They don't sound particularly cheap to fix, and I don't know how common they are. Plus I have a 330i, not a 335i. So I don't know if I'd be a good example for the OP. HTH, Dave |

All it is, is insurance in its simplest form.
Take a group of 100 people who bought it. Collectively, the group loses, but within the group, there will be some winners who come out on top (at a bare minimum break even while taking into account opportunity cost of using that money elsewhere to at least keep up with pace of CPI/inflation). Otherwise, why on earth would extended warranties exist? Everything has to add to bottom line profit for them to offer it. As far as extended maintenance goes, many more will recoup the money. But this is also at the cost of losing money in hand and increasing immediate cash flow to BMW which helps their balance sheet a lot from a financial and investor standpoint. |

I had easy care coverage and when I had a problem they said they didnt cover it even though they said they covered all engine internals and lubricated parts electronics excluding nav etc, etc. They they said they didnt cover vanos. I explained what it was then they said it was a pre-existing condition. I got a refund. So far it hasnt gotten the worst of me but there is still time. If the warranty is through the dealer/bmw that would b the 1 i choose.

Whether or not to purchase the two year exended warranty must also depend on how many miles you put on the car, no? I'm pretty low at 6,500 miles/year over the last two years, so I think I'll have fewer problems than average over six years. Doesn't seem to make sense for me to purchase the extended warranty. Ditto for extended maintenance.
