Comfort Access question

With CA, can you go in the car, start it, then leave, and lock the doors with the car started while the fob is in your pocket? Good for cold weather warm ups!

I believe that is possible but it's recommended not to warm up your car while it's stationary.

See page 50

You might think about the heated seats to warm you up on cold days instead of letting the car idle. I know this isn't exactly what you asked but I hope it helps.

I'm not sure about the pros/cons of doing warm up while car is stationary, but to answer you question: yes you can leave the engine running while walking away with your keyfob. You'll get a warning on your dash saying "keyfob not in car/key fot not detected", but once you get back in your car the warning would go away.

I thought that it gives the warning then the car will shut off, if the fob is out of distance.

Is that what the manual says?

Anyway from my personal experience I never had the car auto shut off on me when I'm away. Couple weeks ago I had the car running and I was on the other side of the parking lot with the keys in my pocket, when I walk back to my car the engine is still on, so, I assumed that's the way it works.

If the fob isn't inside the car, but outside near the car, will the engine start?

I'm asking because I know some people that (if the answer to the above question is yes) would open the door while I'm standing near my car and then just drive off if I were to get CA

And I'm a bit concerned seeing with some of you that the engine might not shut off with distance from the keyfob.

On a more serious note, instead of my friends doing it, it could be a real thief. Not that I live in an area with car theives, but I'm just saying.

For my car to start I need to be completely in the car. I have tried doing it with the car door open and a foot on the clutch but still standing outside (thus meaning my hip pocket with the key in it is in the car) and it will not start. I have to get completely in it.

That's good. But maybe it didn't work because the door was open?

Has nothing to do with the door being opened. I started it with the door opened but I had to be fully in the car.

Interesting, in Australia the cars don't do this.

I get out of my car all the time, like to collect my mail for instance. All that happens is a warning comes up on the iDrive screen saying "Keyfob malfunction" with an icon of a key with a line through it. It goes away as soon as I get back into the car, but has never threatened to shut the engine off. The warning message says something about not being able to restart the car if it is stopped, I think this is to let you know to keep the engine running until you get to service and/or safety if it is a true malfunction.

Yes, you can start up and walk away, but if you do that you definitely can't lock the doors, which was in the original question.
