High Quality, Lightweight 19in Wheels?

Hey All,

I am looking for a set of wheels for my e92. I like the BBS LM, GT-RS, RGR, etc. What other High quality (high strength - houston has BAD potholes), but lightweight wheels can yall recommend? I plan to do some tracking with the car so I would like to reduce the weight but still have very strong wheels. Thanks!

I dont plan to track a LOT but i will be tracking. I would prefer to get a set I can use for both. It would not be $$ feasable for me to have 3 sets (originals, daily drivers, tracks). I am keeping the originals for when I sell the car and would like a nice daily driver/occational track set.

First I would say that there is a lot of options for you. I am getting some HRE's in a few weeks so I cant sleep. Also you want to go with a manufature that will stand behind their wheel. Although a 1 piece forged wheel wheel provide the best performace (ie Volk, Kinesis and CCW) if you nick them then there is very little one can do to fix them as with a 2 piece or 3 piece wheel. So you go to just a tiny bit heavier and $$ and you get a 2/3 piece, which can be repaired. This is where you want to make sure you have a manufacture that you can send off to and they will repair and send back to you quickly. At that point it opens the door to several:
DPE
Iforged
HRE
The above are out of california, which I am stoked
Volk - is out of Japan so turn around could be long
BBS -Is also out of Japan.

In closing you also want a wheel shop that will work with you and knows there stuff. I am very picky and as you can see I have read a lot about wheels and such (obessive compulsive). I can not recomend Creative Autowerks in San Diego more. They have great relationships with the DPE, HRE, IF and Kinesis as they are all in and around san Diego.

Good luck my friend and let me know what you get, i would love to see some picks.

I weighed my 162's with run flats, and the front was 57 lbs., rear was 60 lbs. needles to say pretty heavy. I have also read that the stock 162's weigh 24.7lbs. front and 26.2 lbs. rear, but that would make the runflat weigh 32.3 lbs, and 33.8 lbs. which sounds too heavy, so I think the 162's must weigh a little more.

BBS are over-rated for lightness, IMO, except for LM and RGR.

Go with Volk, HRE, DPE, iForged, or Jlines....

Consider OZ as well - not bad price/quality ratio.

yeah, it's really hard to find the weight data for those OEM wheels, unless you dig deep into a lot of literature

Not true, unless the BBS you're talking about uses conventional casting, otherwise their Form Flowing cast wheels are lighter then other cast wheels on the market. Also, FYI, HRE/DPE/iForged/Jlines are somewhat overated too, they are all forged and of course it'll be lighter then cast (however due to 2 to 3 pcs design, their wheels are not superlight by forge standard)also, broswing through other forums I have come across people complaining about the QA on their products and some of the wheels have imperfection out of the box. If you go with Volk or BBS the QA process is much tighter. Also, from what I've heard, DPE/HRE/iforged/Jlines uses similar forging mills overseas and only the final assembly is in US..

I agree... but the lightest wheel combination possible is going to be a 1 piece forged.

Although I do not want to get into a debate about quality, I will say that it is absolutely without a shadow of a doubt that a one piece forged wheel will be lighter then anything else. I think one of the hardest things of finding a wheel is finding one you like. Man, I lost sleep trying to figure out which ones I like best. My first choice was Volk MEs, so sweet, but I heard people were waiting forever to get them. I could go on and on about how I was going back and forth, but in the end, I thought I made the best choice for look, quality and performance. Price is another issue. Volks are pretty sweet, but you will wait a long time. I guarantee if you pick any of those wheels and you get what you like, they will be awesome.

What about CCW? They make a very high quality set of wheels, completely custom to your liking. The CCW classic is a great wheel, while it is only available in 18 inch (17 inch too, but i doubt u will be doing that), a street set will set you back around 2500 i would imagine in the right sizes. A track set will only set you back like 2200, I dont know what the difference is you would havec to call to find out.
They also offer a wide variety of other styles, the classic is just my favorite. Their website is www.ccwwheel.com

I have actually have spoken to them and they were pretty cool. They have been getting a lot of word of mouth through the Porsche crowd. One set back for me was that they were in FL and I am in CA, so I went with a west coast maker. In hind sight, I should have considered them a little harder as they said they could deliver a custom set of SP16s in about 2 weeks! Which blows away all the others. Also in the end I was also concerned with going to a one piece and something happening to them and not being able to fix them.

BBS RGR. By far the best thing I've done to my car. The weight reduction compared to the OEM M spoke wheels made for an incredibly light and responsive feel - difficult to do on an already great handling/feeling car. No clue whether I got any true performance gains, but the feel alone during everyday driving was worth it.
