For those of you reading this thread due to "sticky brakes:" When slowing down and going slow approaching a stop, lift up on the handbrake until the red light on the dash goes off.
Reverse the procedure for when you're getting going. Why this works, I haven't a clue. |

the trans does store information but not for that long and it's always updated...so people complaining of poor transmission performance (lasting days or weeks etc) suddenly being corrected after this "reset" are probably just feeling placebo... or some other parameter changed that had nothing to do with the reset.
note: It's still a computer though, so there's always the chance that something gets messed up and "freezes" in one configuration which can be fixed by a reset (just like your PC)...but I'd guess this is exceedingly rare (given the fixed nature of the trans software...it's not as though it can pick up a virus) and probably doesn't explain most people's trans problems. |

OK, I drove my car some more today and all I have to say is I felt no difference at all. So unless I did something wrong doing the reset I call BS on this with an e92.

And about that sniffer: 1. Are you ready to risk them finding it? 2. Since you do not know _what_ they did you'll end up with a lot of data but nothing to compare/crossreference against. IMHO you'd need to active sniff in order to gain any useful knowledge. i.e. access to the true tester, someone who really knows how to operate it and the car itself, time and guts (or someone else's car ). P.S. Sorry for OT.

yes that is why you have buddies who have access to the machine. you sniff the obd-port with basically an o-scope. then you have him do sequences like login change codes update firmware etc. This is how VAG-COM cloned the VAG-1552. Probably at some podunk dealer who had a smart kid that would take few grand to go through the machine. If dinan can obd-2 flash i bet they know how to do the rest. And thanks to the world of warez vag-com has been keygen'd for so long its not funny. $8 lol. Then again GM cable owners can just go in and edit their maps and delete codes (emissions) and other things using their $400 cable. it's supply and demand. in the VW world people are colluding (sp?) to keep this technology from the owners. In the GM world fierce competition has forced this to the public at cheap rates. In the BMW world dinan and others monopolize and do not offer such tools. I am a techy geeky girl. Computer Engineer. This stuff is easy. protocols are meant to be cracked. I will pm you when i find the real enthusiasts. They are probably in south america (english) or germany.

It works...
Yup, this just cured 9 months of aggravation for me in 30 seconds. I bought my 328xi with 5k miles, and it had a lurchy start from day one. I learned later that if I pushed the pedal down further, faster, it would get beyond the "lurchy" bit better than if I pushed the pedal a reasonable distance.
After having done the "reset" there is now noticably smoother acceleration from first contact with the pedal all the way through pushing it down. MY thoughts on what's going on is that there is probably a pedal travel sensor that learns if you have a heavy foot or a light one, and responds accordingly. The previous owner probably pushed down harder than I do, so for D mode, it required a heavy foot to accelerate smoothly. Now having done the reset, the pedal is far more sensitive to my lighter foot. Therefore, not sure if this is about the transmission, or the gas pedal, but the reset definitely solved a long standing problem that a dealer software flash could not solve. |

It sounds like it would be more of a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) calibration vs a tranny reset.
At idle, it knows what 0% throttle is, and the kickdown button, it would be able to know what 100% throttle is, and then interpolate inbetween. It would give a reason for that little detent button when you are WOT throttle though (unless that button gets wired directly to the tranny vs the ECU). Do you MT guys have the button at the end of the petal stroke? If not, it would basically rended my ramblings above usless drool.... |

It's supposed to be in electronics mode, i.e. hit the start button w/out the car on...and hold down the pedal (past kickdown) for 25 seconds. I thought I felt a difference in driving, i.e. it didn't granny shift at 1.5-2k RPMs... adjusted to a bit more aggressive driving if you were aggressively driving... As for the chick w/ all the nerdy info, you're not in the wrong forum, just the wrong section, head over to the technical section LOL - the A2DP+bluetooth stereo unavailability sucked - I was looking forward to it, but w/e my phone has an AUX port ftw! EDIT: in the end I may just be spitting BS - but maybe someone will believe it? hehe Last edited by darkphantom; 06-23-2008 at 03:14 PM.. |

I usually dabble in the WOT springs on a frequent basis. So it probably auto adjusts itself. |

I had the "sticky brake" problem too. I would come to a stop and I would have to apply extra brake pressure just to stop and the brakes would make a noise. Then the transmission would push too hard when I lifted my foot off the brake, and the car would lunge forward. I would also get the "jerk" reaction when pushing the accelerator pedal ever so slightly.
Then, I read this thread, jumped in the car, did the procedure and now the problems are completely gone. Acceleration is much smoother, too! |

I will add another positive for the reset. I bought mine used with 58K and after a while I felt like I was driving next to my teenage daughter in a manual; I thought for sure something was wrong. Took it in as it is still CPO, dealer said he reset the transmission so it could adjust to my driving style and it was like night and day when I got it back. Placebo effect isn't even a possibility.
