Help needed to stop parking/sidelight errors when using LEDs

I am about to start recoding my UK spec E91 320d 2006 with normal halogen headlights, i.e. no Angel Eyes.

The lights, which in the UK, we refer to as sidelights or sometimes parking lights, are normally 501 wedge 5W bulbs. When you replace these with LEDs, the bulb checking throws up an error and the LEDs can be seen to flash on start up.

Even though I have tried many "Error Free" LEDs, I still get the problem and I don't want to use extra resistors to cure the problem. Recoding out the bulb checking appears to be the best way forward.

However, I can't see any reference to sidelights or parking lights in the data.

I'm wondering if Angel Eyes need to be enabled?

Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Sidelights as in side-markers?
The wedges on the fenders correct? (or as I recall you call them wings )

If so, they car connected to the REAR turn signal lines in coding and absolutely can be coded out. Backwards thought, I know, but its german engineering haha

No I don't think so.

In Europe, the non AE headlights have an orange indicator bulb that is off except when flashing on the outside. Then moving towards the middle of the car we have a dipped beam headlight and then a main beam headlight which also houses the 501 wedge sidelight bulb. There are no lights on the fenders.

This is part of the problem when trying to identify those lights because they are known by different names and confused with other lights.

Here is a picture of the left hand headlight as you look at the car showing the normal state of the dipped headlights on which also has the sidelight on. The clear indicator is not lit and the bulb in question is the small illuminated one on the right.

Here is a picture that shows what these lights look like when you use a more powerful bulb. Also this would be the first position on the light switch and would be used during poor light, but not dark enough for dipped headlights, i.e. the second position. Also this is the same light that lights when you select the parking lights with the indicator stalk and lock the car.

What's show above is (I believe) the non Angel Eyes DRL lights. However, when using powerful LEDs instead of the crappy 5W incandescent weak bulbs you get a similar but much whiter effect. Notice that the indicators are not lit.

I believe that these bulbs are referred to by BMW as Parklicht and when these bulbs are used individually with indicator up or down and key out, they are referred to as Standlicht if that helps.

I'm still stuck how to do this!

I saw a car the other day and switched the DRLs to these bulbs so I know which you are talking about now.

Do you have coding software? If so can you post your FRM trace?

Grant - I am at the point where I should be able to do this so I will try to get the trace for you. I haven't connect to the car yet because I have been searching about for all the information. I will try this tomorrow.

On non xenon you also can enable drl on high beam, this small bulb is for parking lights only and cant be use in europe as daytime running lights . Do yourself del by dipped highbeam to pass MOt without problem.

yup you should also turn off the warm and cold checks for the same SL_V_L and SL_V_R.

^^^ that is right, set warm and kalt settings for the lights to nicht_aktiv. The lights you are looking for are most likely the ones that have POL, SL, and Sidemarker in their names.
