Whistling noise coming from rear of car? (VIDEO)
First off, hello everybody, I have been browsing this forum for a while but just joined recently as I picked up my e92 lci 335i. Great forum, very helpful!
Now my problem: I have a whistling noise coming from the rear of the car. I suspect it might be the muffler but I really have no idea. I can only hear it while inside the car and not outside. It sounds like very slight vacuum/whistle kind of noise that happens constantly at 25km/h. There is no relationship RPM/transmission at all, as I tried different variations of gears and RPM's and the noise persists just at around 25km/h constantly. This noise can also be heard as I start up the car. Also, as I get to higher RPM's, the noise will be more random. But the noise just happens constantly around at 25km/h. Here's a video of the noise. If you turn up your volume you'll hear a little whistling noise at 0:04 seconds in. I brought the car to the dealer and they thought that it was a muffler problem. They replaced the driver's side muffler, but I picked up my car today and the noise is still there . I thought about trying the golf tee mod to see if the problem would go away, as this seems to be somewhat related. What do you guys think? |

I doubt that's the blow off valve as there's no relationship between the throttle and the noise. The only time I can make this noise on purpose is every time I pass 25km/h.

If you turn up your volume louder you'll hear a little whistle/vacuum sound like.. a "zew" sound at the end of 0:04 seconds. Hard to make out at first but once you hear it it's pretty obvious.

Okay, yeah I heard that.
Still don't know what it is though. Sounds vaguely like a turbo bypass valve running. Ideally you'd do the ol' "mechanic's stethoscope" routine on it, to isolate where it's coming from. I take it you can't reproduce the sound revving the engine while parked?

That's the weird thing! I can't replicate the noise in any way whatsoever unless I hit around 20km/h. That's when I hear it every single time. I would say that at higher RPM's the noise comes on at random times too, but the weird thing is that when I hit 20km/h, I'd hear it every time . I have found no relationships with the RPM's or the shifting at all.
I'm thinking it might be either the muffler or the turbos causing this and since my dealer swapped out the muffler already, I take it as it's probably the turbos? On another note... lmao.. I didn't get that joke until I watched that video. |

So I found the culprit of this noise. Just for the record if anybody experiences this noise also, it was the exhaust flap opening and closing. I did the golf tee mod and the noise was gone. Although I still doubt that this noise is normal as I haven't heard it in other 335i's that I've driven. Weird thing is though, my dealer swapped out the muffler and the noise did not go away. Anyhow, I love how my exhaust sounds with the golf tee mod now, especially those farts and burbles . Just a little bit of drone at low RPMs that I can live with.
