335d Acceleration Flat Spot
Hi All
I noticed today when putting the 'pedal to the metal' while going up a hill that my 335d started to accelerate fine, then lost power and hesitated for a split second, then continued to accelerate normally. It was a bit unnerving to loose power for that split second Has anyone else experienced this flat spot behaviour with their 335d? Is this likely going to need a Progman update? LRS

It was weird
The engine revved up then hesitated for a fraction of a second (lost power), then the revs picked right back up again. It’s almost like the engine hiccupped for a second while under full throttle. I’ll contract BMW service on Monday to discuss.

Just sounds like a basic misfire to me, could be caused by many different things. As said, I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again.

The loss of power did happen during kickdown. It went like this:
> Full throttle - with full acceleration > then kickdown - loss of acceleration > then full acceleration. It’s the kickdown lag that concerns me, especially if I really needed constant full power for an emergency maneuver to accelerate out of trouble! Calling dealer tomorrow.

Perhaps it was the traction control cutting in when you kicked down, I've had that on the 335d.
BTW Carlos diesels can missfire. Regards Chris

Maybe it was deliberating whether to change down another gear as you entered kickdown.
I have never noticed this but I must try entering kickdown while in the lowest available gear for the revs and see if anything 'weird' happens.

could be one of the waste gates opening and dumping the pressure out of the inlet manifold.

Flat Spot
All current BMW's have adaptive transmission management (ATM). Put simply this is a technology that enables the car to learn your driving style. If you drive the car at low speeds, as in heavy traffic, and this represents most of your driving, or you are a very careful conservative driver, the car will adopt this pattern and will respond sluggishly when you revert to a more aggressive driving style. As I live in a very congested urban area with heavy traffic I have found this feature of the car to be intolerable. BMW have assured me that it can be corrected if the car is driven aggressively for at least 2 weeks. As this is virtually impossible for me in my neighbourhood I have decided to trade my BMW E90 323i for a Lexus IS 250 which does not have this unfortunate technological side effect. You can drive a Lexus in bumper- to-bumper traffic as much as you wish, and when you next put your foot down on the accelerator, the engine responds instantly with full power. BMW have told me ATM is their way of getting around the stringent emmissions and fuel efficiency standards applied in Europe. Whilst the car was never meant to be driven sedately it will meet European hurdles when it is driven this way. All cars are heading in the same technolical direction, but BMW is probably 8-10 years ahead of the competition. Small consolation if most of your driving is in urban traffic. I hope this helps to explain the problem you are experiencing, which for became progressive worse over the 12 months I have driven the car.

... just disconnect the battery for 30 mins to an hour. The Gearbox will reset. As will the ECU Ignition mapping etc.
Only thing you will need to re-programme is the clock which takes 10 secs... try it SJ |
