Questions about my new E92 on order
I have an '09 e92 on order and i just had a few question that you guys might be able to answer. The car is equipped with the steptronic transmission, but people tell me that i should change it to MT before it is built. some opinions please? also, if i do get MT will it have the new transmission ive been hearing about? my second question, 19"s or 20"s? some friends say ill have problems with 20"s... thanks!

It has to be a 335i coupe if it has Steptronic and is an E92.
Personally, from several test drives, I believe the Steptronic is better in this car than the MT, but that's only because the manual is (IMHO) underwhelming in feel. The clutch is good, but shifting is notchy, slow and cumbersome. Some of this can be improved by removing the CDV and maybe adding a short shifter, but I don't know how much. The Step is the best auto I've experienced in a car; the DCT could be even better if BMW does it right, but that's not an option for MY2009 (unless you don't happen to live in North America). You should test drive both immediately if possible and make up your mind. I definitely wouldn't put 20" tires on this car, and frankly 19" is a stretch, unless you don't care about an overly harsh ride and potentially worse handling (larger diameter wheels mean more unsprung weight). But the fact you're considering either tells me you may care more about a certain look, so you need to decide on the tradeoffs yourself. |

I think we should ban people who can't decide for themselves what colour there going to get there car in or what transmission there going to get or how many doors there going to get ect
drive the bloody thing and make up your own mind! |

I would recommend a MT, only because I feel like any sports car should be a MT...its more fun that way IMO. And for wheels, I would recommend 19"s...20"s look to big too me and must ride awful! I have 19"s on mine and love them.

No DCT in US for the 335i as of yet.
For 09 the e92 has MT or Step same as 07-08. I would go and drive a MT and Step e92 since it is going to be the same trans as 08 and decide for yourself. If you cant find a e92 then drive an e90 or e93. We really can't make up your mind for you. Half of us will say MT all the way and the other half will say auto all the way.

It's OK to ask which points to consider, but for something that's so subjective, you just GOTTA go do some test driving and see what you like. The main, overriding reason you spend the $$s for a 3 is the ride (and driving experience). That can only be judged by Hands On.

I have the manual.
Manual : more fun when you're energetic. A drag is you've had a long day at work and you still have to deal with traffic. |

+1 on the Step.
It's the first auto I've had, and this is my 6th car. But the combination of just how good the e92 felt test driving, (with paddles and DS mode), and the real fact that it's a daily driver, almost always in nasty traffic, made the choice for me.

for the tranny its up to u. i like MT but i went w/ step cuz i couldn't wait 3 months for it. personal preference. and go w/ 19s. 20s r just too big for a e92. 19s give a better look.
