2B more specific:

The engine of the 318d is in fact the same as the 320d except via the motormanagement they have reduced the power from 163 bhp to 122 bhp and the torque from 340 Nm/min to 280 Nm/min.

Same goes for the 318i vs. the 320i: same engine, but electronically reduced from 150 bhp to 129 bhp and the torque from 200 Nm/min to 180 Nm/min.

I always find it interesting that the 325i outsells the 330i in the US 2:1 but these forums are always weighted towards 330i owners as far as participation...

4 banger? The 325 has always had a 6 cyl regardless of series or generation (even back to the E30 days).

Agreed. I have no interest in the current line of cars and engines. I'm waiting to see the new engine lineup, which is why I'm not planning on ordering soon.
