They let me test drive one when I showed up in the wife's Odyssey. Figured the Ody was better than showing up in an SRT-4.

Running a cast iron block with no oil > running aluminum block with no oil
Most GM cars no longer run cast-iron blocks. I don't see how they would be on different "playing fields". Unless BMW engines operate in a way that no other manufacture engine operate I don't see it being any different.

I've been around cars long enough to know that a mass produced GM V6 has high er clearances compared to a limited production M engine, AMG, Porsche or whatever. Mass produced cars for the most part are meant to run with minimal maintenance and care. It's the nature of the beast.
I am NOT trying to start a GM bashing, I love certain GM products, but to say you filled a Monte Carlo with oil after it had none and it ran fine therefore an M3 will be fine seems obtuse to me.

I know what your saying Chad and I do agree with you. If it were my car and they didn't replace the engine, I'd be furious too. You just have to see if from an insurance companies prospective. If it ain't broke, it aint getting fixed.

Being around cars for awhile and being in the business is different. I've also worked as an autobody technician so I pretty much a have really good idea of what they will and will not do. Just sayin.

That's why insurance is a massive racket. We need it but damnit they are a pain in the rear!

When I say around cars I mean in the business; Porsche/Audi tech for close to ten years now and prior to that I was at a mom and pop garage surrounded by domestics

No worries! The internetz has no inflection, as such it's kind of hard to have a normal conversation.

My vote goes for CLK63 Black Series, or pick up a 996Turbo and slap on an EVOMS kit such as the GT700.

I enjoyed driving 996Turbo stock more than Stock E92 M3 but that is my opinion. I prefer more raw feeling in a car and be as connected to the road as possible, which is why I have owned 6 of the same cars.

Well Sid good luck with it either way. IMO, Id get a 1m. Sure your back in a n54 but the 1m will be a collector car (production stopping at December 2011), its basically an M3 with an engine that you can tune to be a BEAST up here. Handling and power. Just a thought, didnt see it on the list here.

2012 Porsche Cayman R, if a Porsche. The little bro of Porsche grows up to beat up his
big brother.

Definitely, if a new Porsche a Cayman R....or a 993 Turbo.

What about Lotus Evora? Unique car about in that price range.

I think if you go for the Cayman, you should see if you can get the Cayman S Black Edition, so long as your car isn't primarily for the track.

Call me soft, but I prefer my road-going cars to have air conditioning and door handles instead of cloth straps. ~_^

The seats in the caddy aren't nearly as comfortable as the bimmer. Sure, it's a rocket on wheels, but if you spend that much on a luxury performance car, you should be comfortable when you settle down.

My vote? M3. Don't sacrifice if you love the car and the brand.
Even if its an E46, then you still have some cash to play with for an HPF kit and other goodies.
