So BMW just released a bulletin....

Turanza EL-42 RFT's, either 16" or 17", with scalloped/cupped wear at inner/outer/both edges, which are making tooo damn much noise, are now to be replaced, under warranty from Bridgestone. ONLY if you have fewer than 20,000 miles on them, and the wear is as indicated. If you have plugs/patches or any other repairs, you will NOT be given free tires. If you have between 10,000 and 20,000 miles on them, you may be asked to pay 50% of the cost of the new tires, none of the labor.

Bridgestone is warranting the tires, NOT BMW. SOME dealerships will not be able to replace your tires for free/50% cost.

Have fun NOT bitching about your turanza's, at least for a while.

yea, a copy of the bulletin would be great...i could print it off and take it to the dealer...i think i only have 5000kms on mine...only used last winter and this winter so far and i dont exactly track on winter roads..is this a NA 'recall' from Bridgestone or just US?

it's not a recall.

It's a bulletin, meaning, IF You complain, they know what to fix.

I don't know if it's US or all of bridgestone.

I'm bringing this issue up at my first upcoming scheduled maintenance stop.

I have 13,100 miles on the tires and they're getting louder by the day. Its quite disconcerting to hear the almost metallic grinding sound when coasting to a stop or rolling at low-medium speeds (particularly prevalent in city driving).

Kinda irritates me though that I have to pay anything for a manufacturing / design flaw. Sorry, but I don't care how much use I've gotten out of the tires. They were faulty and shouldn't have been on the car in the first place.

Question for ///Matt. Do dealership techs use torque wrenches when tightening the lug bolts, or just an impact wrench?

Just ran the numbers for this deal using prices from TireRack.com:
- If you're replacing all 4 tires and have over 10k mi on them, expect to pay around $338. Ouch.
- ($169*4)/2 = $338

Annnnd....where do I find this bulletin so I can bring it to the dealership with me.
( You know how sometimes service departments don't know everything they can do for the customers).l

I found the TSB at http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B360606g.htm.

The TSB implies that the dealer replaces the defected EL42 RFTs with new EL42 RFTs. This may be a bad move unless Bridgestone has improved this tire design significantly.

My dealer will replace with the Conti Contact Pro SSRs. I bet that this is a better choice. I have already gotten rid of my old EL42 RFTs and gone to Michelin Exalto A/S which are non RFTs. Love them.

IF I get some cash back, there's a finder's fee in there somewhere for you! I called me dealer, he said I'm good to go on them noting the tires were my problem in Dec. with a mileage less than 20K. I have a case open with BMW NA to see if they will comp me some cash or something since I had the tires replaced from TireRack with the Contis.

Got a call back from BMW NA (that was FAST!) and I go to the dealer's on Thurday with my paperwork and they are going to split the cost on the tires and pay up to $20/rim for installation charges. SWEEETTTT!!!!!!

Sorry, bud, that's not a tire issue.

That's a ROAD issue. Steel plates, severe potholes, things like that... when you have a low profile tire and you hit a sever edge, you damage the tire.

I've seen people ask the city for money to replace bubbled tires with and get some. It just depends on your city gov't.

What about noisy Potenza tires? When I had them on my 162's, those things were REDICULOUSLY loud. There were many occasions where I heard significant tire roar over engine roar. Tires probably had a total of about 15k miles on them...

I just revieved full set of Continental RFT for free.

Just go and tell them the tires only has about 9000miles on them.

If your car has more then 10000 miles on it, tell them you used aftermarket tires for a while.

I'm so happy.
