Damn, a hit like that mustv'e knocked a couple of your fillings loose as wheel. Maybe it's good the wheel broke, probably a lot cheaper to replace a wheel than to replace the suspension components.

Another observation. If you look at the wheel weights you see two others 180 degrees across from that mass on the other side. So instead of removing a few from the original mass that person just stuck MORE on the other side.

How lazy is that? Or is that wheel so inconsistent that the densities differ from front to back of wheel as well. If so, it doesn't seem like a wheel that I would put on my car.

Bloddy Hell .... (my English friend likes to say) in this case I shall say it as well. Here I thought I had it bad ... lost 2 rear wheels to cracks (BMW Style 296 wheels). This crack is incredible I've never ever seen anything like it. How big was the creator do you know?

Sorry I missed the services I was properly shovelling snow My deepest condolences hope it never ever happens again. Well done by the tire to hold things together so well and I tip my hat to your so very detailed and humorous report

Oh my Z4 I traded her in for my now M3 having forged wheels and non-RFT gives me piece of mind.

I know this is an older thread - but that's some definte carnage!

In defense of MiRo, ANY cast wheel would have prolly faired the same. It is true that forged is always better than cast for strength. You just have to weigh the xtra cost vs avoiding huge craters. I have seen forged wheels that have cracked also after meeting with severe crater, but normally they bend before cracking - which in my book still means the wheel is FUBAR

Metallurgy between cast forged methods - cast always will have some extent of porosity. If mfg. quality control is good - wheels with internal defects will be caught and discarded.

As far as the extreme amount of weights on that wheel, and the fact that you stated it was bad from when new regarding vibration - as you stated 'you get what you pay for' pertains to mounting/balancing also.

(2) things to remember when getting tires balanced:
  • Always use vendors that use ONLY Hunter Road Force Balance equipment (the newer the equipment model the better) - preferably use the new 'Touchless' equipment that totally eliminates the chance of any wheel damage during mounting.
  • When mounting tires on new wheels for the first time, ALWAYS have them check each wheel on the machine for runout before mounting the tires & provide you with the spec printout (again, Hunter Road Force equipment can do this). This will tell them whether the wheel is true before trying to balance - once you mount the tires - the wheels are yours with no chance of returning for credit if they are untrue.
