Overheating in my 2006 325i

Long story short, had to pull over this past weekend to let it cool down because had those thermometer symbols appear in yellow then red. Checked coolant level, full, at least within the norm. Fan works. Water pump works, I tried to do a venting procedure, can definitely hear it slushing water around and when touching hoses can feel that coolant is being pumped thru. The thermostat is kaput, I know it because when scanning with my (non BMW) OBD reader it shows a error code with something like "thermostat circuit open". But as far as I know they fail in open position, so should not contribute to overheating. What could be the issue? Car is 2006 E90 325i with about 70k miles

In my 06 I had a similar issue and I changed my thermo and water pump and back to normal. Not cheap fix but it's gotta be done on these cars. Good luck.

No other codes, no check engine light either. Really hoping it isn't a water pump, those things not only cost a lot they are a pain to replace too
