LCI Bluetooth and iPHONE 3GS

I will be taking delivery of my car next week. Checked this forum and BMWUSA.com/Bluetooth. Looks like there is some limited functionality regarding voice quality with the iPHONE 3GS. And also some logistical issues when listening to iPOD/iPHONE with incoming call. For those that have an LCI e90 with Bluetooth with iPHONE 3GS - what has been your experience - How does it work in your opinion? Thanks

Works flawlessly - I have 2011 Oct build with HK/iDrive/smartphone
Standard iPod USB cable allows music and bluetooth on the iPhone 3GS. Music stops when a call comes in and resumes when the call finishes. No problem with voice quality when making calls. The iPhone integration works transparently - the car does just what the phone does, ie: when in random and you skip to goes to the next random selection. I also got the smartphone cradle for the iPhone, but I am not sure the expense justifies eliminating the usb cable. Good luck with the new car.

Thanks alot for your response.

No iDRIVE or smartphone cradle for me.

I will have an iPHONE and an iPOD in the car. What if I have my iPOD playing, and I get an incoming call on my iPHONE? Will there be any compatibility issues regarding making / receiving calls from iPHONE and playing iPOD at the same time?

I don't think that will work, not only that but some iPods wont work with the standard cable. I tried to use a dedicated iPod Nano 2nd gen and it did not work. I suspect it might work with the old "Y" cable that charges through usb but plays music through the car via the headphone jack and AUX input. I just gave up on that and use my iPhone to play music and make calls when I am in the car.

Thanks, the dealer says he's giving me a cable. So I assume that's the Y cable. He says I will be able to use my iPOD playlists with this cable. Tried playing my iPOD in a loaner with no cable (only USB) an was not able to see any playlists. Man did that suck!

Can anyone confirm that this cable he is giving me will allow me to see the iPOD Playlists on the radio head unit?

Probably, it should work the same as the pre-Sept models when using the "Y" cable. The control info and the charging happen via the USB, and the audio travels via the AUX port. I don't have a "Y" cable so I can't tell you for sure.

Thanks. My old 3 had the dedicated 30 pin cable located in the glove box (that plugs into the bottom of the iPHONE). The dealer says the audio quality and playlist functionality from the Y cable (located in center armrest compartment) in my new car will be exactly the same. Can anyone confirm?

I'm not totally sure I understand your second question. So, you have an iPhone 3GS and an iPod. You want to play music through the stereo with the iPod, and answer phone calls with the iPhone?

Your car is a new 2011, and from the sig it looks like you got the Value Package, which on mine came with what I think is called the 6FL, which is the iPod/USB stuff. The new electronics in recently built 2011s should allow just the USB cable to work. Your loaner may be older?

If so, you should be able to use just the USB/Dock cable to play your iPod through the stereo. You can then pair your iPhone over bluetooth. When a call comes in, is should take over your stereo system.

I just got a 2011, I do have iDrive/Nav unit. I plug my iPod into the USB port and pair my blackberry over bluetooth. The phone calls take over the stereo.

Correct, you understand my second question. This is helpful info, thanks. My car is a 2011, with a recent 2010 build. It sounds like I will have no problem playing the iPOD through the USB via 6FL / Y cable AND be able to make and receive incoming calls with my iPHONE via blutooth.

FWIW

For What It's Worth, and I don't know the exact build date of mine, but I don't need/use the Y cable. I just picked my car up a week ago and it had not been on the lot all that long.

Glad it helped.

Now, about being able to see my iPOD playlists in the stereo head unit with the provided cable: (Not sure if its a 6FL or a Y) Does anyone know if I will be able to see playlists with the cable? Thanks!
