Exclamation Stiff Steering after power steering flush

Hey guys, I just performed a power steering flush myselfby sucking out the fluid out from the reservoir and filling it up and then bleeding the system by turning the wheel all the way to the left and the right. While bleeding the system, i closed and tightened the reservoir cap after filling it with fresh chf 11s.

I did this this 2 cycles and got most of the dirty fluid out but Im sure there are still lots of crap inside. I made sure the level of the fluid was right at the top line on the dip stick.

After I noticed that the steering got more stiff.

My question is, when doing the bleeding, was I supposed to leave the reservoir cap opened??? (thinking it may be air bubbles in the system)

Also, can it also be because the reservoir filter is clogged this eliminating the flow?

Thanks

I noticed the same when the dealer performed a flush. I think the OEM PS fluid is slightly different from what the dealerships use.

Note: my vehicle just requires ATF and not the Pentosin fluid.

when i opened the reservoir and asked a friend to turn the steering wheel, i see the fluid moving a little bit.

can this be due to a clogged filter?

Some cars use CHF-11 others use ATF, first thing first did you use the correct fluid?

Nothing wrong with your procedure, I did the same thing, except I went through the entire bottle.

mine says chf 11s on the cap. i have like 10% of the bottle left.

I plan to grab another bottle and go through another 2 flushes to clear the fluid even more

Did you solve the problem because I have the exact same problem? The cap says atf. And that's what I put in. The fluid inside was black and dirty so I don't know if it was red oil.

Be careful with this one guys; in my car I originally had a cap that had a sticker on it that said to use CHF 11s, then after cleaning my engine bay the sticker came off and I discovered that the cap was actually printed "ATF only". BMW wanted $20 for a new sticker or $20 for a cap that had the correct stamp on it, so I just changed the cap to one that was stamped for CHF 11s, but this is something I would be wary of.

I wonder if the dealership can run a VIN to determine what fluid is supposed to be in the car.

Im a little scared with my car. just purchaced it used about 3 weeks ago. the power steering was low, i was getting a notchy feel when turning left. went to che the fluid and the cap had a green sticker saying CHF on it. so i got some and toped it off. the notchy feel went away but the steering was stiffer. checked the fluid today with a turkey baster and the fluid was mostly red and smelled like ATF did some dummy flush and filled it with ATF or did the cap get changed to a CHF cap. will be checking with the dealer tomorrow. they are having an owners event.

wow interesting find. Mine says CHF 11s. I will double whats printed on the cap. Mine is a bit low but I am waiting to get my oil change so they can add more as my coupon includes the top off all the fluids. oil change, car wash, and 1 multi-point inspection for $89.00

plus I still get to use my $40.00 coupon which probably only be good for key holder from the boutique...

ALL e90-93 USE CHF 11s!! I did this procedure two weeks ago and didn't notice a damn thing. I didn't have a problem just always do preventative maintenance. I googled and searched and the sticker does come off. If thats the case I would get two bottle of CHF 11S and get all the ATF fluid out!!!! Its not meant to be in there. ATF fluid is printed below it im assuming its a universal cap they have one for other makes and models but put a sticker over it. This is why I always do a search before working on my car. I did my fathers X5 as well and thats strictly ATF fluid (E53). His was not so dark and he has 270k on his and he had it since day one. I do all the small maintenance work myself on it and I think its been 100k since the PS fluid has been changed out.

My dealer tops off fluid for free.. Just bring it in and they put washer fluid, oil and even damn coolant ( You have to wait like 30 minutes for this). In the last 8 years of ownership I never had to put washer fluid in or any fluid myself. You have to ask them to do it though but they will do it for free of charge.

Also I always tell them to do an inspection to the vehicle when they do my oil changes and he does for free. Sometimes they find something wrong and I get a loaner. I have third party warranty and the service adviser tries to find any possible faults to get it done since both parties actually benefit from this.

Trust me I looked and I was like WTH is CHF 11s lol I had no idea what that was. I googled it and was found at only at O reilleys autoparts. Dealer was further away and was more expensive anyways.

The cap for my X5 and E90 looks exactly the damn same.

Flushed all of ATF out and replaced the resevior with a new one with a new filter. Refilled and flushed with the correct CHF 11s. the steering is still a litte stiff at lowwer speeds.

I noticed a faint rubbing like sound at 3 yrs. Decided to give the service dept a bone and get it done. The sound disappeared after the change.
