ANYTHING mechanical (shamois material) that touches your car is damaging the finish. You just are not as particular as many here.

Check your window trim after using Touchless wash. It changes color-like rainbow or gas on water.

I've gone to the same carwash for the past 9 months and my car looks great! No swirl marks, no scratches, etc. The key to a good mechanical shammy car wash is completely hosing the car down before it touches the shammy material to avoid dirt/grime/pebbles getting embedded and scratching the next car that comes thru. I stand behind Autobell (http://www.autobell.com/) 100%

The key to a good mechanical shammy car wash is not going to one in the first place. It's not the dirt on your car that you need to worry about -- it's the dirt/grime/pebbles that's already embedded in the shammy from the previous cars that went through. |

and your carwash is not unique, as every car wash hoses their cars down before the shammys touch them. even the carwashes arent stupid enough try and shammy a dry car. Last edited by sleepyx637; 09-16-2010 at 09:48 PM.. |

You've never heard of hyperbole? I care a great deal about my car. I don't let bird crap or dead bugs stay on the paint for more than a day when I can help it. Dust and minor road dirt, on the other hand, I'm not as picky about cleaning all the time because it isn't going to hurt anything. |

Thanks for everyone who posted cautionary tales about Jet Black cars going through automatic car washes! Your paint jobs will not have died in vain.
I guess I'll bust out the hose and wash my car tomorrow morning... by hand. I've got all the stuff to do it, but thanks to being a little OCD about these things it always ends up taking 2 hours for a simple wash. A shiny BMW is a good cause, though! I probably won't wax it though, only because I've never waxed my car myself. Are there any good how-to guides out there? I assume the wax that comes in a Windex-like bottle would be easy enough to do, but I also suspect that stuff is crap. Hence, why I assume "real" waxing takes a lot of effort. |

I have a jb e92 and i use natty's blue (http://www.detailedimage.com/Poorboy...x-P30/8-oz-S1/ )...or rather, i should say i used to use it. It just takes too much time to apply and then take off, so i've moved on to Optimum spray wax, which is one of the better spray waxes out there (http://www.detailedimage.com/Optimum...P280/17-oz-S1/). Takes about 10-15 minutes to wax your entire car with it.

You should only being claying the car maybe once a year for polishing. In essence clay bar is mild sand paper and will induce its own swirls over time if used too much. No offense to you but this is like my 6th post on incorrect use of claybar. for some reason people have the impression its like a magic eraser. *** Having a Jet black car is probably the worst mistake I made... Its very hard to keep clean, the paint is soft as hell, and its a bitch to work with. Wash it by hand, wash it with the best methods, best sponges/soaps and towels and pray. There is no automatic car wash that does it correctly like you can by hand... NONE. |

I don't believe it either. All that dirt gets mashed in the chamois. Then it gets rubbed on your car.

I got mad pissed seeing others improperly wash my car.
Some carwash uses recycled water... Most of Automatic carwash dont take care of everything that is excessive (too many bugs, too much dirt in winter) and you always end up having a car that is not washed up to your standards. I've been washing my car by myself for a couple of years now and its the only way I can feel happy about the way it looks. Whatever the price is, i've NEVER been 100% satisfied by a washing job done by either a machine or human. And I have to do it every week since my JB E90 looks UGLY even with only a little rain pouring on it. I hate it... But love it at the same time.

I also have a jet black. a e90 335i in my case, I used a clay bar on the car one time, ran the back side of my fingers across and saw an amazing difference in drag from where I had just clayed it to where I hadn't yet). Keep in mind, I have read there are different clay bar compounds. After that, I waxed with Zymol (a Carnuba mix). I know theres much better out there but it works for me. I waxed it about every other day for a week or so and now I wash it every 3 days by hand and wax it about once a month. I still rub it down with the back side of my fingers to check and as long as I keep the wax good, it seems fine and smooth. Looks great, no swirls either. I am going to take it to a pro soon though because I just have some hairlines that have been there since I bought the car (2nd owner).

I haven't had this happen before. I always go to the same touchless place which I've been satisifed with, but my car is the DD and gets touchless washes weekly in the winter when it's too cold or I don't have time to ONR it.

Have the oxidation on my window trim right now, but since it's winter it is going to wait until it at least gets warmer outside. Regarding the car washes, I used to work at a chamois style car wash and we pre-washed/sprayed every car/truck/van/suv that came in but that didn't help much. When they left, they were super clean, but everyone had massive swirls in them when they left, and this was a pretty affluent area, no shitty cars, new BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, etc. If you care about the black paint and want to keep it looking decent, DO NOT USE A CAR WASH THAT HAS BRUSHES, you are gambling huge with them.

I have a BSM car that I picked up Certified and the paint was literally flawless (well almost) and at one time I appraised cars for a living. Scroll down to, "How to: Properly Wash your Car". I use this method as I am paranoid of swirl marks and scratches, they're gonna happen but this is what I do and it's working fantastic. To each his own but my car will NEVER see an automatic car wash. Last edited by timothy2001; 01-29-2015 at 10:58 AM.. |
