Actually it was the Power Service stuff I was using (I edited my post above). I do not know what my starting "thump" was. It was not very loud, but it was noticeable. It may not have been bad at all. But I wasn't expecting it and I hadn't read anything about it on the label of the additive, so I backed off using it. Maybe I will try using the additive in every other tank and see if the sound comes back.

Drove a loaner 328d the other day. In addition to the "Low-Sulfur Diesel" notice on the fuel cap, there is a prominent "No additives" warning printed around the fuel filler. The manual also has a warning similar to the 335d's manual.

Wonder why BMW is so serious about this?

God forbid they don't get a post-warranty payout of $15k for replacing the entire top end due to CBU.

Im intrigued some of us use it some dont I am curious as to what not effects, my car is running excellently but who knows maybe im setting myself to be FAULKED, but i doubt it, I'll stick to my guns!!

I was hoping that the 335d and I would be taken to the junkyard on the same day, and not because of a fatal accident. It varies from day to day, but it looks so far like I'm winning the race. But with all the negative posts the D may still eke out a victory.

I started using the PS Gray this past summer every other tank or so. I get 3-4 more mpg with the additive, pretty significant change for my car. I switched to the PS white this last tank because it got down in the 20s these past few weeks just in case. With the carbon issues we have I am hoping it will help some, plus my JBD. Who knows if it will help long term but it helps my mpg and more cetane is never a bad thing. I have noticed a pretty big difference in diesel fuel quality in my area so I will continue using it every other tank or so.

I love the additive for what it does, but it cannot improve my winter mileage when 10 minutes a day is spent warming up the car.

It goes up to 35mpg in the summer and down to 22-23 in the winter. Now if I was actually to do a road trip more than 15minutes this would vastly improve, but it's not the normal for the car.

I will see if the PS white helps my winter mileage at the next fuel up. It certainly helped in the summer and pretty significantly when doing highway miles. I was surprised.

Don't be. Additives don't improve mileage. You'd have to do a study to actually show it anyway. Your car may be cycling through its DPF or something else like your driving style changes.

The only major thing I have noticed from the additives is that I don't really have regens anymore.

So ... some additives can and will improve efficiency.

Although this study was done neatly, it is not double blind and it has only two trucks tested with and without additive, plus a "control" truck. Just driving style alone can account for the 3% especially if you know there is additive in there. We really don't know what the expected variance (variability) is but the first bar graph, if accurate, tries to tell us.

I suppose one might make the argument that fuel with additive will trigger less often the efficiency-robbing pollution device activity (EGR, DPF regen, etc.) when used properly. The amount of NOx and soot, for example, may affect efficiency, hence the additive helps indirectly. But this is on pre-DPF tech in 2004, on non-ULSD fuel, so its not representative of possible current findings.

I use liqui-muscle every so often during fillups in my car. It's made for heavy duty trucks so I only add a couple of millilitres of it at once

Pretty Sure that AMSOIL is repackaged Stanadyne; though it is very good stuff and recommended by many diesel pump shops.
