Iphone 4 adapter DIY from 3g adapter!

If you are one of those who upgraded to new iphone 4 and have a 3g BMW adapter which does not fit, read on!
I was able to make a small mod to the iphone 3g adapter to fit the new Iphone4. All you need is a carving knife and the old adapter.
1. Remove the adapter from the car
2. Lock the top edge of the adapter by pulling it away.
3. Now locate the top edges on both sides of the adapter and using a knife, carve off the both top edges on the 3g adapter as shown in the picture.

The iphone 4 should seat well in the 3g adapter. I tested all the features and the idrive populated all the music and was charging the phone properly.

If you have access to a Dremel tool , it is easier and more precise.

Thank you for the experiment and success. Were you able to verify the extent to which the roof antenna is still used with iPhone 4? It seems that the connection was based on induction in 3GS and the location of the antennas has changed. The silver side edge around the phone serves now as antenna.

I looked at this closer. The reason why removing the top edges helps is that the iPhone 4 gets only half way into the bottom connector due to the curvature of bed at the bottom end. If adjusted in the way described above the iPhone 4 will sit 2-3 mm further forward than the 3GS. It looks like it is still enough connector contact for proper operation.
For a perfect fit actually the bottom part of the adapter would have to be grind to make the bottom end more square and allow the connector to fully penetrate into the phone.

I was thinking about doing this..but I'm worrying about the bottom of it scratching the back of the phone up. Maybe line the bottom with felt?

I had the bestskinsever protective skin on the 3g phone. Just ordered one for the new iphone 4 (was around$6). Currently I had an extra 3g skin that i am using on the 4.
It seems to be protecting the phone ok. I have put the phone in the cradle at least 5-6 times today and no scratches.

The reception was good. I was able to make and receive calls with the phone in the cradle without problems. The signal strength in the idrive indicator showed full bars but I am not sure if that really reflects the signal strength.

OK. So I followed the steps above. One important thing to note that after the modification the phone doesn't snap in anymore, but is jammed in the adapter at slight angle (see 4th picture). So the snap-in adapter becomes a provisory adapter for the next 2 months (my estimate) while waiting for the proper iPhone 4 adapter.

Does anyone have any idea before BMW releases an official iPhone 4 adapter? I'm still waiting to upgrade until the iPhone 4 gets released in white.

I actually ended up doing this. Instead of carving it, I melted the plastic with a simple butane lighter and molded it with a wrench. Came out perfect.

iPhone 4 adapter modification

I have the same problem so took my Dremel with a small rotating sanding drum to the adapter and now it works fine. It looks rougher in the pics than it actually is, and it works fine.
I found it was sometimes awkward getting the phone lined up with the connecter so I glued some stiff card under the connector to raise its angle slightly. Pics here -

Just to let you know if you have the original 2G iphone snap in adaptor your iphone 4 will fit without any modification and it will not scratch or damage your phone.
