Scaremongering parts department

I got the usual 'You do know that that engine requires specialist engine oil don't you sir' when I was purchasing an oil filter today. I didn't take the bait and just nodded. Do you reckon that they get a prompt on the screen?

Extended Warranty?

I thought that required BMW main dealer servicing?

This is an extra oil change. I get the oil changed every 7.5k (rather than 20k!) but the main dealer doesn't need to know that

That has changed recently then?
Looking at the policy on the 5GT which would have ended next month if we had kept it, it says that servicing had to be done with the main dealer.

I understand that to keep regular warranty under EU rules you can service where ever you like as long as you use genuine parts, however, when it is an insurance policy they can dictate what they like.

This has been discussed at length before, so unless it has changed recently i would be careful with that one.

You're correct.

With the insured BMW warranty it states you must have the car serviced at a main dealer.

My dealer told me that I can supply my own oil though and they would only charge about £35 for labour. I'll be finding out soon as I change my oil yearly which equates to about every 5000 miles!

Costco are still doing Mobil 1 at £29.98 for 5 liters and Castol Edge also for £29.98 but for only 4 liters.

Which one would ve the best choice for a 320i ?

As above.

Although it's probably best to get things like oil changes, brake fluid etc done at bmw so they have a record of your car and would be more likely to fight your corner in the event of a warranty claim.

Are you sure mate?

When has this changed? When I took over the policy with Mondial, which I've renewed on a yearly basis now, they have always said that there is NO need for BMW dealership history. as long as oem parts are used and it's a VAT registered garage...

I posted this up a while ago when I questioned this with Mondial.
This is the email response...

Following our recent telephone conversation, this email is to confirm that in order to keep your BMW Insured Warranty policy valid, all service work must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. Proof of your service may be requested at the point of making a claim.

All servicing must be conducted within the correct specifications and servicing schedule according to BMW. All parts must be BMW Approved and the servicing must be carried out at a UK VAT registered garage.

Please note all vehicle repairs and warranty claims must be completed by an Approved BMW Dealership.

If you do have any further questions or queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

You don't even need to use genuine BMW parts according to their own policy wording!

What must I do to keep the Warranty valid?
The terms and conditions of the warranty listed below must be adhered to. Failure to do so will result in the rejection of a claim or the termination of your BMW Insured Warranty. This does not affect your statutory rights.

1. a) Care of the Vehicle - You must keep Your Vehicle in an efficient and road worthy condition and regularly service it in accordance with the Manufacturer’s recommendations and genuine parts, or parts of equivalent specification must be used.

TBH i wouldn't stray away from BMW genuine parts - no matter what anyone says, there IS often a difference between genuine parts and OE equivalent ones. Perhaps not to the degree of parts being 2 or 3x the price, but there often is a difference in fitting, quality and longevity.

I went into Costco for the price of the oil.

On my document policy and on the document policy currently down loadable online, page 21 quite clearly states;

1. All service and warranty work must be carried out by an Authorised BMW Dealer or BMW Service Authorised Workshop using only genuine BMW parts.

+1

This is accurate, I went to BMW today to see if they would swap out my 313's which is suffering with the dreaded 'milking' around centre caps. I asked about doing a service myself and the guy there said it has to be done at the stealers or an approved garage.

He told me that if I did it myself of via an Indy it would automatically void warranty.

VAT registered garage + OEM spec parts and correct grade oil/fluids is fine.....and does not void the BMW Insured Warranty.
