Alpina D3
Does anyone out there run an Alpina D3?
I have an e91 320d DMS'd to 209 bhp and would like a little more go. The D3 has 215bhp. Just wondered how tuneable this is...?

Actually, I understood that the D3 has twin turbos with changes to pistons etc. and I also believe that it isn't as tunable as the 320d because it's already been given some extra oomph. -235bhp?

the original D3 had one turbo....
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evoc...alpina_d3.html ...but only 197bhp. the newer D3 with 214ps is I guess is based on the twin turbo from the 123d? |

The old single turbo unit had a narrow power band. The new biturbo doesn't have this problem. 0-60 time is 6.9s standard, so quite rapid. I think evolve has remapped one of these to 240bhp. So I would guess that would give a 0-60 time of 6ish seconds. The D3 are supposed to handle and ride far better than the m sports. |

Alpina D3 Positives...
Pretty good power standard, very good mapped. (250bhp just) Much more exclusive, bet you never see another one on the road while in yours. Looks great and a bit different. Will see 40-55mpg. Switchtronic auto is better than the BMW auto. Ride is better, they use M-Sport dampers with SE springs off the 335xd, and then put on oversized Pilot Sport 2 tyres, not run flats, so it is very comfy and handles wonderfully. Cons.. Manual aircon on them!! A £30,000 car with manual air con!! Add any option and there is a £2k surcharge now, so if you want climate and nav those 2 options will cost you just under £5k!! You can buy an ex demo fully loaded 330d m-sport for less than an ex demo D3 BiTurbo. The residuals on them with the finance houses are not great, they have a value similar to a 320d m-sport after 3 years, which makes them more expensive than a 335d to fund. (although in reality you have a decent deposit back at the end because they do better than the finance houses suggest.) Insurance is a mare!! I tried to get cover on a touring and I was being quoted between 2 and 3 times as much for a D3 than my M3 I was driving at the time. Only get 2 years warranty and no goodwill contributions with anyone other than Sytner. A great car fucked up by Sytners imho. If it had come with Nav, climate, usb and hi-fi it would have made it a £34k car instead of £31k and would have made far more sense. As it is seeing them exdemo for more money than a 335d with all the toys just doesn't makes sense to me and I am sure many think the same. I have the 123d now and love it, mine is mapped and I have got my 0-60 down from 7.1 to 6.2 seconds, it is a very capable engine and it is light compared with the 330d, although I have not tried the latest 330d to be fair. My iphone said I had 202bhp before the remap and now saying 248bhp, and I am currently showing 54mpg on it, I have never had that from any car, which is pretty impressive. |

Its ALPINAs loss not your mate. I totally agree if it was fully specced for 34k we would see a lot more of them on the road.

But I really wanted one!!
The thing that really annoyed me was I tried to get Sytner to buy my 320d M-Sport touring, when they realised it had no nav they wouldn't take it, not even a piss take offer was made, just were not interested, then a month later when I was looking at the D3 they insisted that 3 series buyers were not interested in nav or climate. |

they obviously thought they would duplicate the sales sucess of the first D3, how they were wrong id have one fully specced at 34k also.

Why not just buy a 330d or 335d - the Alpina is a nice car but extremely expensive. I was looking at a B3 bi Turbo but once specced up i could have bought an M3 for similar cash.

No.
Depends what I wanted it for, as a fun car it has to be M3, as an exclusive mile muncher that will gobble the miles in complete comfort then yeah, in Alpina Blue with cognac and cream leather with the 19" classics please!! |

I have the original D3(1 turbo) and have just spent 2 days in 120dSE coupe with 17" alloys and pretty high profile RFTs on it. Now I know its not like for like but the ride and handling on the 1 was quite frankly pants compared to the D3. While it was lighter and felt a bit more agile, this was all undone by the constantly bumpy ride and the fact that the DTC was lighting up around almost every roundabout, it was just too harsh and as a result ended up feeling unstable. If I can't have another D3 when the lease on this one is up then I don't think I'll want another BMW while they persist with the RFTs.
The original D3 also has auto aircon, and I was under the impression that you could have it on the D3 BT if you specced it on order, without having to pay the £2k premium, although I may be wrong on that my understanding was you could forfeit metallic for a solid colour in order to get climate aircon. My choice would be white!! |

Yeah if you go for non metallic you get climate, however, this is on cars ordered by Sytner and I don't think they ordered any, apart from the white one with the black dynamic wheels, and I think this still has the manual aircon.
I have currently got a 123d M-Sport and this is the first RFT shod car that handles well and is not a fidgety mess, it is on 17's and ha Goodyear tyres. I will not be swapping them for proper tyres. It is now my 6th BMW with RFTs and this is the first time I have not swapped within a couple of weeks. |
