Speed Limiter
Thought I'd share my experience with the speed limiter on my car, as I'm driving back from Prague through Germany right now...
Driving along, needle all the way off the clock - resetting the average speed on the computer shows 163mph..! So the limiter is very soft, and I would imagine it varies from car to car. Don't know how accurate the computer reading would be though. Also says that at that speed the car averages 20.2mpg (wish I had a 335d now... probably would stay around the 29-32mpg mark at that speed!) Oh, and for anyone who does drive in Europe a lot, I would seriously recommend uprating the brake pads. Was pootling along at around 135mph (I think) and some nutcase pulled out in front of me to overtake the car in front... cue some seriously hefty braking, right down to 80mph.. car didn't serve offline even one degree, just smooth solid braking. Although I reckon on the standard BMW pads I wouldn't have anymore brakes until they had cooled off and that might have been a bit more scary (I changed mine to EBCs a couple thousand miles ago...) Oh, and also... driving along at 140-ish, saw a set of xenons catching up with me, was already in the inside lane, then woooooooooooooosh and a Koenigsegg zoomed past like I was going backwards What a noise though (and huge airwash too). Am majorly impressed all round with how well my car drives now. And it's rock solid at speed, which will be the same of all E9x Bye all for now... catch up again when I'm back in Blighty with a bootful of smelly French cheese and chocolate croissants!

It would be interesting to compare the speedo at those sorts of speeds to a GPS source as generally most over here have only done it at (or admitted to doing so) at about half the speed. Perhaps SJ would like to test with Viv late one night?
To be fair at those sorts of speeds the brakes ought to cool pretty quickly as well. Safe driving Tone

I was told that the limiter was not removed with the remap. The reason given by E-Maps was that they do not like removing the limiter in case the tyres are not rated high enough for the new upper speed limit.
I did not care anyhow - as I will never approach such speeds.

On my first ring trip this year I got upto an indicated 160 in the 325d (my pioneer sat nav was showing a GPS 154 mph) The car was still pulling all be it quite slowly but I had to brake hard to avoid a blind Belgian man in a Megane. On the second trip I got upto an indicated 170 in the M3 (in 5th gear) but didn`t have the portable sat nav as its built in.
The BMW speedos seem to be about 3-6 mph out but very accurate to this, all the way around the speedo, I have a pic of Ant and Petes E90 D3 showing a GPS 162 and the needle is just under 160. |

Awesome mikey Is your m3 de-limited? seems BMW limiter is a bit soft and allows people to go way past the 155mph supposed limit! what bhp was your 325d to get to that speed? Carlos

The 325d was running just short of 240. The M3 was completely standard. The limiters do seem to be very "soft" there`s a myth that says if you pass 155 in 5th then change up it doesn`t cut in but I`m not sure wether I beleive that. I don`t even know what the rev limit is on the M3 as I`ve never felt it kick in.
