Creaky rear suspension!

Hello all,

I just wondered... does anyone else with an E9X get creaky suspension? Especially the rear?

I only usually notice it when I get out of the car - but a colleague at work mentioned he has the same problem.

My car is an M-Sport if it makes a difference.

I wondered how much of a case (if any) I have for getting this looked at and hopefully cured under warranty?

A mate noticed this on mine the other day - Not M Sport though. When standing, if you bounce the rear - it creaks?

I noticed this several times a few weeks back (creak from the rear), also when I get out of car.

Will keep an ear open tonight as would like to resolve if it keep occuring.

Absolutely, you can bounce it or its just if I climb out of it - it seems to be getting louder as well.

The car itself doesnt seem to suffer when driving.

Similar thing happened with my 350Z. Turned out to be the suspension bushes.

Realised after I'd posted that message that is was an Astra Coupe Turbo I used to own that had the dodgy bushes. My 350Z had a squeeky drivers seat which was extremely annoying.

You must have had a 'friday-afternoon' build 350Z. Mine was pretty much well sorted bar a couple of niggles. I'd still have it back though (m u s t r e s i s t 3 7 0 Z!!!)

I can confirm its the parking brake, BMW use seperate drumbraking for handbrake inside the rear discs thats what creaks.

Easy test as I did on mine was to keep handbrake off and then bounce the rear, hey presto no noise

There have been quite a few cases of creaking dampers - these have been replaced under warranty. There is a PUMA case out there for it, but I can't find the number for it right now... if I remember I'll dig it out tomorrow.

Other causes for the squeaking noise when bouncing the rear of the car - suspension bushes, although very unlikely on our cars as the bushes are more like elongated rubber bump stops that act as secondary damping (much more flexible than an ordinary bush). Could be the rear antiroll bar bush that's dried out - needs more lubrication (and wait for the inevitable snide comments here!!).

Final cause would be that all the welds on the back of your car have failed and it's about to fall apart...

Take your pick!!!

Then you'd better buy a new car, 'cos yours is fecked....!!

In seriousness, it's more than likely the dampers as it's a known issue now with BMW GB. Get on to your local dealer and ask them to look at the computer for open PUMA cases on creaking suspension - they should find it easily!

As does every other manufacturer I can think of.
