Front end noise

Just upgraded wheels from 16 to a staggered setup 225/40/18F 255/35/18R. I am getting a weird clunk from the front end after the car has been sitting for awhile. It only happens when going in reverse and then I can't duplicate the sound until it sits for an hour. I have 07 328xi with 102k miles on it.

Do I need to get the computer re flashed because I went from 16-18?
And would this be my problem or would it be something else?

Any help would be appreciated

You definitely wont need a computer reflash. That has nothing to do with going with a staggered set up. I heard, and I've said this on a similar thread, that it could be the abs system doing a check on itself on start up, if not make sure your new wheels are at a 72.56 mm center bore. If they aren't you need hubcentric rings. Or take 10 minutes undo the lugs take the wheel off and seat it back on the hub correctly or make sure it's seated correctly on the hub and then retighten your lugs. If none of those solve the clunk check your thrust arms, ball joints, and end links and see if there is any play in them and torqued to spec. Check your calipers make sure they are tight on the knuckle although you'd certainly feel and hear a loose caliper. Hope I could help, just my .02

It could be your transfer case not liking the 18" staggered set-up. Are the tires new or used? I would switch back to 16's and see if it still clunks.

For the last 2 days the car hasn't made any noise. I have been trying to pay attention when it does it

I run a 19x9 et 25 and a 19x10 et 23 and my transfer case has no issues. Also, make sure your rolling diameter is less than 1%... just thought of that for your staggered set up

assuming it's not the transfer case, it could be the front brake pads... I bet they are shifting in the calipers, which can happen from time to time particularly when changing direction. If that's what it is it's not a big deal. If it bothers you try applying brake lube to the contact points of the pads to the calipers (obviously don't get any on the pad face).

I hope it's not that. It's going on the lift first thing Saturday morning. The good news is that I haven't heard anything for over a week. But it still has me worried still. I will let you guys know what I find

thats more than likely it, that has happened to me and the clunk was alarming and only in reverse. My pads are low and could definitely shift.
