Whats your view on Audis?
A mate of mine is picking up a fastback S5 with a few nice mods and i have to say wow what a car!
It certainly makes a E90 335i look kinda drab in the aesthetics dept and it has the power (well this one has 270kw atw with a few mods) to back up the looks. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...-1093277/?Cr=2 Normally most Audi's dont do it for me (R8 and the RS models being the exception) but this thing looks beastly! So whats your view on Audi's? |

I was lucky enough to be invited on an Audi drive day about 6 months back. Drove a lot of models from a 2.0 TT to the 3.0 petrol and diesel A4/5/6s, an RS5 and an R8 V10 Spyder.
Their normal cars are quite nice. Quite refined and a good amount of power. The RS5 is pretty awesome and makes epic burble and downshift noises but on "dynamic" mode it's like driving on rocks for suspension, just crazy. The R8 V10 Spyder is just out of this world epic... It's hard to describe but it is absolutely brutal in terms of its power and braking yet at the same time being quite refined and not scary to drive. I floored it many times and never once got any hint of wheel spin. Solid as a rock.

Thats a lot of money for a second hand S5 with those kms regardsless of mods. When i went to Mosman Audi they dropped a sportsback S5 to 115k driveaway in front of me to an older couple that were just asking around. Audi provides massive discounts, no doubt it effects resale. Your mate is getting taken for a ride.
Oh and what i think of Audi's... |

Can easily negotiate this to low 100k mark and grab a great face lift S5. Just saying.

Cliff Notes... Audi's are fine cars, just not really a "drivers" car if that's what you are looking for....
OR I drove an S5 for the first time a few months ago. I was contemplating buying on VS the 335is. When I picked up my last 335i the S5 wasn't around and as soon as I saw one on the street I was like "damn I messed up", I should get an S5. Mostly it was the look of the S5, it to me is still one of the best looking cars on the road today. Subtle but elegant, AWD and V8? What isn't to love? Well, after driving the 2011 S5 with a 6 speed, I can say without hesitation that these are NOT drivers cars, they are something else. I dunno what they are, very nice, very comfy, smooth, etc. BUT... I was actually offended by how numb, distant, disinterested, heavy and ponderous the S5 felt. It was bad enough that I was genuinely a little bit pissed off and even asked the AUDI guy if there was something wrong with this car. He looked at me puzzled and continued prattling on about the car regardless of my request for him to STFU. (politely) So, is the S5 slow? Clearly not, we have all seen the numbers, we can watch the videos. BUT, does it feel slow??? OMFG YES, felt like I still had the parking brake on. It gets worse. The steering was comical, and I'm not being unkind, exaggerating, the steering feel was so bad that I have begun to question ANYONE's driver cred when they claim the S5 is an awesome performance car. This was part of my anger with the car. It is a perfect I mean PERFECT answer for me on paper in the Pacific NW. Rumbly V8, 6-Speed, AWD, and sexy? On Paper this should have been nirvana. Whats worse is my direct comparison at the time was my 2011 370Z, a rough little brute of a car. Certainly the S5 is quicker to 60 and much better car in every way, no discussion there, BUT what killed me was how absolutely neutered it felt. Heavy, ponderous, slow witted and simply confused by corners. In sharp contrast the unsophisticated and frankly unpolished Z felt like a rocketship once I crawled back in and took off. Instant response to input, AMAZING steering feel by comparison, and just FUN, eager playground fun. Something Audi clearly doesn't understand. The Z "Felt" so much faster and lighter on it's feet that numbers be damned it's head and shoulders better than the S5. It was this experience that had me right down to BMW just a few weeks later. I had driven the 335is and it was everything I thought the S5 was supposed to be dynamically. Most importantly it "FEELS" faster than the Audi and the Z, has the bells and whistles I was looking for and had just enough refinement rubbed on it that it's livable day to day. Feel is what really matters if we are honest, day to day. If I feel like I am hauling ass then I'm GTG. Numb it up too much and the fun is gone. It's why a Miata can be so much more genuine fun than a Corvette. It's about feel, not numbers. Sorry went off on a jag there, but I was and still am pissed at Audi, and I feel that MOST of the positive driving reviews I read about Audi at this point have to be Fan boys, or plebeians who have no real interest or understanding of vehicle dynamics, driving, or hell fun for that matter. Here's the "HOWEVER". There is no doubt that modern Audi's are on par in terms of quality, refinement, durability, and safety with the rest of the Germans. I did drive a regular Audi A4 wagon about a year ago and found it to be a fine car, fun to drive, quiet and useful. With a different set of expectations and as a car for my Wife, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if that's what she wanted. SO the PUNCHLINE would be Audi's are terrific cars, perfect for people who are looking for comfort and AWD, and Folks who don't understand nor care about actually "driving" and are more worried about cup holders and a quiet ride. They have trail-blazed the path to Lexus-hood that Mercedes built, and BMW is gleefully skipping along with dollar signs and Mass market appeal in their eyes...

Whoa, also I didn't realize this was the Australian forum... Sorry for jumping in.
Though I'll wager that Audi's aren't any better there.

i personally would think Audi do have a winning interior... i was looking for a S5 3.0TDI before jumping on this 135 a month ago... but bimmer engine just tip me over.
i would go for an Audi if im not aftering the power.. Quattro and TDI is something! that S5 have been in carsales for many months.. hopefully your mate has negotiate a much better deal than the advertised price tag. |

I was in sort of the same boat about a year ago but towards the S4 not the S5 vs 335i but You are ABSOLUTELY right about the numbness feel to it!! Something is just not right with the feedback of the steering whenever you are driving the car. Somehow BMW still has that regardless when they went towards electric steering, but even that it's quite accurate! |

The supercharged V6 engine lacks character, especially compared to an N54. I don't know how an ABT tuned one will go though so I can't comment about the car in question in the carsales ad. |

pre-facelift have ages terribly! Nice interiors minus the steering wheel on pre facelift
The rest..... boring, slow, terrible handling, clunky dct, sound terrible, terrible on fuel, always struggle after being driven hard for 1 minute. Not an exciting car to drive! |

DR-JEKL, when you look for a girlfriend what's the key factor you are looking for?
Sex life? Appearance? Inner beauty or comfort? Without a doubt your current gf n54/55 has won numerous pornstar of the year award backup by perfect balance and handling of your sexual desire. Then you met this georgious 0000 lady so sexy and unresistable that you may one day cheat on your gf. Soon you found out that she is like a dead fish during sex..she reach climax way before you..... lack of feedback make you dont feel like a real man. But what she is lack of she made up with her glorious inner personality and you felt very comfortable sitting on her soft lap. So the question is what is more important to you?

My view on Audi: If you just want a family car to carry the kids, then an Audi would be a good comfortable choice. They are spacious and don't have Run Flat tyres.
Apart from that I wouldn't consider buying any car made by VAG not fitted with Lamborghini V10. Last edited by John_01; 06-02-2013 at 02:54 AM.. |
