went to the dyno today

But with my other car

Interesting to see how much more mod friendly some engines are compared to others. IMO, honda makes the best NA 4 cylinder engines in the world. Here's an example of a built integra motor in my civic. It makes nearly the same power with 2/3rds the displacement, in a car that weighs 1100+ lbs less

I'm not saying it's better than my BMW, as the two cars are very different. This car is purely a toy for track days and time trials. It's light, has tons of grip, and consumables are very cheap. The BMW is my daily driver and gives me lots of comfort while still retaining very good driving dynamics.

I've been driving the honda to/from work for the last couple of weeks breaking in the new motor, and believe me, I'm always happy to get back in the BMW for the daily commute. However, get out on the track, and there is no comparison when you have a car that is setup for doing just that. It's great to be able to choose between them, and not have to compromise.

Pics below. First dyno is the honda, and below that my E90 325i with 3-stage IM and AA tune.

yeah.. rev limiter is set at 8600 right now, which is actually a little low compared to other guys with cams and valvetrain mods. Lots of people spin these motors to 9000+.

most of the stock dohc vtec engines revved to around 8000 rpm anyway (integra GSR, RSX-S, Civic Si, etc). The S2000 went to 9000 until 2004. My valvetrain is good for around 9500 rpm or so, but I purposely picked cams that would make their peak power around 8000, just to keep it safe.

I have a AFE dry filter and cut out the charcoal filter in the stock airbox. Everything else is stock.

Also, the dynapack dyno typically reads 10-12hp higher than a dynojet, so keep that in mind. They dyno bolts to the hubs of the car, so you don't have any wheel weight to spin

So is that effectively the difference between bhp and whp? It sounds like it (about 10-15%), since the dynojet usually dyno higher than the Mustang ones.

If that is the case, then that would make me sad, since our cars are supposed to come stock with 230bhp. This was also the AA 1st gen tune too, right?

I don't think so - because you are still running the power through the drivetrain, so there will be losses compared to bolting the engine itself to an engine dyno.

It's just a different type of dyno than a dynojet. Dynapacks are load based, while Dynojets are inertia based. Dynapacks are also a lot smaller and portable, so they are much more convenient for smaller shops to acquire and work with.

And yes, this is a stage 1 AA tune. I'll upgrade to stage 2 soon

I'm more suprised that the engine makes power all the way up to 8400rpm. A lot of people can get an engine to spin that high but getting it to flow is a different story.

It's a "poor mans" ITR. I started with a GSR block, and found a '00 ITR cylinder head. bored and sleeved the block so it's basically a 1956cc Type R motor.

The dohc honda vtec heads flow really well. You just have to pick the right cam to match where you want the power band.

I love how you can totally Frankenstien Honda bottom ends and heads and they come out really powerful. Makes you wonder why Honda didn't try it lol!
