Question BMW Shuttle Service

On my way back to the dealership yesterday, I noticed one of the passenger tipping the shuttle driver.

Is this the norm?

I think some people tip because they think it gets them an "in" with the person. "Hey this guy gave me a dollar, I'll be 5 minutes early to pick him up"

I don't mean to sound stingy, but it is their job. Unless they did something that was beyond their call of duty or provided exceptional service, then I don't think it's necessary.

It has never even dawned on me to tip an auto dealer shuttle driver. I have never seen anyone else do it. I travel a lot so I carry $2 bills to tip maids, buffet attendants, bellmen, etc. Maybe I'll offer one to the shuttle driver next time. But since it doesn't appear to be part of their salary (as it is for cabbies, waitresses, etc.) I don't feel bad about not thinking about it. (so far)

I don't mentally classify them with airport shuttle drivers - those guys do nothing but drive all day and probably have no other opportunity with that employer. Dealer shuttle drivers are usually only driving in the morning and afternoon and do other things for the dealer during the day, from what I see at my dealer.

I'd rather have a loaner, frankly But since my dealer is the only BMW dealer in the whole state, they don't need to compete on this point :/

Unless they carried my luggage onto the shuttle and/or do something that is not required of them, then normally i do not. A simple "thank you" goes a long way.

Again, not to sound stingy, but why should I pay them when they are already paid to do that as their job? I understand that it's a service job, but do you tip the servers at McDonald's or the chefs in the restaurant? Like I said, I tip if they go beyond their call of their job duty, but normally, no.

gez... the guy probably makes $9 bucks an hour... and you are driving a $30-$40-$50,000+ car....

... you can't tip a dollar? ... gesh.

I get that "tips" in todays society are not "earned" they are "given" ... customer service is awful everywhere...

but damn, think about that guy, he probably HATES BMWs and their owners... he drives around these "uppity people" around all day and hears them complain about a $1,200 repair bill, or spending $500 bucks on a damn car battery... and then promptly goes home to his 1 bedroom apt. in the city...

... give the damn guy a $1 and be done with it.

I'm sure he'll appreciate it if you give him a couple dollars.

You're the only other person I know who does this!
I get them at the bank and people seem to love receiving them.
It's as though their novelty value makes them worth more than $2.

Well, in theory maybe. But in practice loaners are sometimes more hassle than they're worth.

Tips are overrated in US.
I tip only when I get a great service.
I've tipped my SA with bourbon whiskey.
I've tipped doorman of a building I'm just visiting to drop someone because that guy was awesome at doing his job.
I've tipped service guys at other countries' airports who help you check-in your bags.
I've not tipped properly to some servers who had real bad attitude, poor service and bad food quality.
No offense, but a tip is not a right, you earn it with your service.
I also earn my money by doing hard work day n night. I'm not bound to give tip to anyone until I receive the service which deserves it.
