I am a little pissed that the new gen X3 is
faster and more sports oriented than the current 3 series. The 0-60 for the new base X3 is 6.7 with the 8-speed auto, compared to 6.9 on a base 3 with manual. The new X3 also has the adaptive damping control, then the obvious utility advantage.
The new 2012 3s better beat the new X3 in its own game or else bye bye sports car, hello SAV. |

Even barebone stock you should be able to do 0-60 in in the low 6's in a E90 328 (auto but DS mode). Although this is my first and last 328; 335iS here I come

It is product advancement and is nothing to get pissed about. If you've ever purchased a computer, or any consumer electronics, you've experienced it before.
Although, had BMW released a 335is in sedan form, rather than just coupe, I'd probably be pissed too! |

The new X3 has D, DS and sport plus modes, maybe it can do 0-60 in the high 5's? And it is xDrive BTW. It will be a shame the new gen 3s only match the X3.

The problem is, based on what I have read in the sedan category, the 3s are getting away from sports and becoming more a family sedan to compete for your average US consumers, the trend does not give me confidence. At the meantime the X3 is going the other direction.

You can do some basic tunes to give your 328i more pep but honestly if you all about the HP and 0-60 game then you should have bought a 2011 335i and not a 2011 328i.

I can get a around 6.5 secs in my 330xi with sunroof, xdrive, power seats, subs and no performance mods besides an drop in filter. My car weighs like 3750 pounds.

In the world of posts that make no sense, this post is King. X3 vs 3 series? Really? Come on, these two cars have totally different missions. They look different, they drive different, they are just plain not even comparable and if you think that because the x3 is within .2 seconds of a 328's 0-60 time that you should switch then frankly I'm baffled by your logic. Go buy the too small to be an suv (not too mention fail as an offroader ) and too tall to be a car x3 if it bothers you that much. I'll stick with my 335xi.

I think the issue is that the new X3 is using a lot of newer technology and features that are not on the current 3 series, but likely will be when the next gen 3 series comes out. A more fair comparision will be the next gen 3 series vs. the X3.

Exactly what I was saying, guys just didn't read me carefully. First off I was comparing the base engine. We can also compare the new turbo engine if necessary.
The bottom line is the new X3 beats the current 3s on several performance stats. The new gen 3s will have to do a lot more to answer its own game. Yet I see the trend on the 3s, at least on the NA versions moving away from its core. Just look at the new 5s. Can mod X3 too, NA or turbo. Last edited by dtc100; 09-23-2010 at 12:31 PM.. |

If you are considering the 3 and the x3 as competition, do us a favor and buy a white automatic x3 and then crash it into some garbage cans.

If there is a crash test in the competition somewhere, I would hate it to be a test of driver's chance of survival when broadsided by a civic But of course I am not trying to compete with an X3, just hoping the new gen 3s can do much faster with much better suspension than the current ones. If BMW can do it for the X3, they sure can for the new 3s. The question is do we all feel lucky? Last edited by dtc100; 09-23-2010 at 05:54 PM.. |

Wow, I did not know 3 drivers can be so sensitive, if you sit in an M3 maybe I will understand.
How can a crossover even be faster to begin with? I don't care if they are one gen apart, an X3 should never have been faster, period! |

If your measure of sport is just 0-60 numbers, then there are a lot of Accords and Camrys rolling around that are sportier than your 3.
