What would you pay for this E90?

Hi guys, I am about to purchase my first on my own and found a nice 2007 CPO 328xi with a 6-speed stick and ~31,700 miles. The car is white with a black interior and dark wood trim. It was put into service in November 2006 and in pretty good shape, just a small dent on the bottom of the rear bumper and the interior smells like someone may have smoked in it but I'm not sure if it is just some leather cleaner they put it. The car has the following options:

Sport Package
Premium Package
Heated Seats
Comfort Access
Parking Assist
Navigation
iPod Kit

The dealer wants $29,900 for the car. I check KBB and the value is probably somewhere between $24,000 and $24,500. My family has bought a few cars for this dealership before, including a car from the salesman we are dealing with. Over the summers of my college years I worked as a car porter at the dealership and my parents are friends with one of the guys who runs the place.

I was just pre-approved for the 48 month 0.9% and 60 month 2.9% financing special that BMW NA is offering. My question is what do you think I should offer for the car? My dad said I should start off at $25,000 and work my way up. The car just came in and it's get towards the end of the month and end of the year so I am thinking they would be more willing to make a deal. Do you think I could reasonably get it for ~$26,500.

Thanks for any suggestions you guys might have, it's a little nerve racking for me since this is my first time buying a car on my own.

Thanks,

Dan

What is the trade-in value for the car? I would aim ~3-4K over that amount. Basically ~2K to CPO and 1-2K dealer profit. This is a sellers market so you should be able to snatch it for less than the KBB/Edmunds retail price.

according to KBB the MRSP for a CPO car should be 32,785! I'm thinking if they got the car for $24,000 + $2,000 CPO cost and $1,000 dealer profit puts me at $27,000.

Ok sounds like that is the approximate mark. It all comes down to how desperate you are to get it and how desperate they are to sell it. If you found something you really like I wouldn't go nuts over 500 bucks.

There are really 2 ways to approach it, you can either shoot the 25000 figure and work your way up, which can be exhausting. Dealers are good at negotiating they do it day in and day out. Or you can determine what is the right price for the car in your head and give them the numbers with no negotiating.

I don't think that is unreasonable at all. There is a dent on the bumper and the interior just doesn't smell right. Personally, I would not purchase a car that has been smoked in. But, why start high when negotiating? As you dad said, start around $25K and see what happens. The worse thing that can happen is that they'll say no. And, always be willing to walk away. They'll always call you back. Of course, the one risk you run into when waiting it out is the car may get sold to someone else.

I'm not going to be heartbroken if the car gets sold. It is the only manual cpo 3-series on their lot and the one of only a very few with in a close distance to be, bu honestly the auto would be a better choice for me over the long-term since my gf doesn't know how to drive stick.

Galves, which most dealerships use as it is based more off of auction prices, which is where they get their trade in value, is $20,325, and market ready value is $21,725. It is very difficult to get a dealer to get close to these prices, but it is your base point like others have said $20k + $2k CPO + $1-2k profit...

Aside from price make them send it to a detailer to get the smoke smell removed. It can be done but can be costly. I think 27 k is the most I would pay for this car. I paid 24k for a 2006 330i with similar equipment and miles in July.

Do you guys think it's a good idea to get a 1 month subsrciption to Galves?

edit: if it make any difference I believe the car was either a direct trade in to the dealer or a lease return to the dealer, I'm not sure if they bought it at auction

Would the removal of the smell be permanent or just temporary?

just be like, "I don't NEED the car, I want the car. my best offer is $26k because of this and that, take it or leave it" or tell them to fix the bumper, give it a good cleaning to get the smell out, after all it's a CPO, and if they do that repeat the sentence but offer $27k."

I have heard this argument before from other fanatics, who later really regretted their decision. Buy the car for you, NOT your GF (who knows if she'll be around). I am biased of course, b/c I love driving 6MT. IMO, it's more engaging than auto transmissions. I am sure I'll get arguments from the DCT/Steptronic owners, but again, that's just my opinion.

You can teach your g-friend to drive stick, you can't teach your BMW to be a manual.
