BMW Assist for maintenance

It was my understanding when I bought my 335i that the car had the ability to send a notice to my dealer to inform them that the car is in need of service and they would contact me to set up an appointment

Am I mistaken, and if not how does this work?

This feature begins with 2007 models. What will happen is, when something is wrong a message is sent to the BMW Assist call centre, they will forward it to your preferred dealership and then you will get a phone call.

This is what my salesman told me

Well I have 335i and that is what I heard too, But it does not seem to work. I think this is related to the ability to put the color and plate number and profile information into the radio and that does not work. I was told by the service department that the feature bug is still under investigation by BMW engineering.

Personally I never trust the service people since they tend to tell you things just to get you to stop asking questions.

So I was wondering if anyone knows exactly how this works and whether it is fact a support feature. since I just had a warning indicator come on in the car and my local dealer was never notified I had to call them up.

No, all E9x with BMW Assist have this. It´s been a BMW feature since 2005.

Whether you get a call depends on your dealer. Most do, but some do not (inexplicably).

not when something is wrong but just for service (i.e. time for an oil change) issues

Well excuse me, lol.

It has been available on the 3 series since 2005 according to teh information pasted from the bmw assist page on bmwusa.com

TeleService (Service Request) keeps you in the driver's seat, by transmitting your status and service needs to your BMW center automatically, or manually upon your request. Your BMW service advisor will call you to schedule a convenient service appointment. This exclusive feature allows your service department to have any needed parts ready, saving you time. It also reduces the chance of a breakdown later- adding to your peace of mind.

Available on 2004 and later 5 and 6 Series, 2006 and later 7 Series, 2006 and later BMW Assist-equipped 3 Series Sedans and Sports Wagons and 2007 and later BMW Assist-equipped X5 and 3 Series.

I have a 06 325 and last week after going out to lunch I had a message on my cell phone that my car let the dealer know I have 1100 miles until my oil change and to call them to set up an appointment. So it does indeed work..

Did it tell you which dealer it called? How did it know that was the dealer you want to take your car to for service?

How do you put the color and plate number into the computer?

my exact point, how does it know what dealer to contact, I did set on BMW site's owner circle service center preference, does it use this information or does someone need to go into the computer on the car and set the information up.

You can call BMW Assist and ask them how your preferred dealer is listed?
