Dealership/Sirius Install Rant

New to the forum but have been trolling for a year. Need to get a few posts in so I can PM a couple of the vendors so I will start with a rant.

I have been trying to price out and get Sirius installed on my 08 e90 sedan with Sat Prep. My local dealer just quoted me, get this:

$1879.27

I laughed. I explained that all I needed was a module for the trunk, install and coding. I really was looking for the coding cost because I will order the unit and install myself. He said that a module would not work and that I needed to replace the radio. I am aware that BMW had to get a new vendor for the units this year but a new radio? I will be looking for a used module if that is the case. Anyway, he insisted that this has been the same cost for the last five years even on a car with SAT prep. I just had to leave.

Thumbs down Update

Apparently BMW HAS repriced the satellite module to $1140(list). Still investigating it but maybe they have integrated it into the headunit and stopped making the trunk modules? If this is the case, BMW no longer wants anyone to add factory Sirius to their car. For $1879.27 I will take the aftermarket look any day. I could add a Kenwood DNX9980 installed for that price.

Anyway, still waiting on confirmation as to why the price more than doubled.

Also, does anyone have a used module they may want to part with?

Angry Update

For anyone who has been reading this, I have confirmed that BMW did raise the price of the module itself to $1140, up from $495. This is an apparent move to shaft anyone who has a unit go bad. It is also clear, once again, that BMW does not want you to retrofit this unit. If you do pay $1140, not including bracket, install or coding you are insane. People complain about the cost of BMW parts, which typically are not that bad considering quality, but in this case they are clearly trying to rip you off. BMW can kiss my ass on this one.

Not necessarily related to Sirius but this type of thing has convinced me that I won't own a car similar to a BMW that isn't under some sort of great warranty. I can just see that sometime when the blinker lever stops doing what it should I would be told - you need to replace some computer motherboard(?) and that will be $2000.
At 495 it is a rip off - a Sirius module used to cost about $100 and a year license was $150 - well it did take almost 5 minutes to hook up the module.

Thats crazy a price. I went with an aftermarket plug that goes directly into the port in the trunk, ran it up to the ash tray in my car and installed a sirius radio there. cost me maybe $150 total and 30 minutes of my time to install. The sound is perfect b/c the unit is connected to the antenna on the car and the unit is powered by the socket in the armrest.

Guys.. $1140 is the price of the 2010-on Professional Radio with built in Sirius Tuner. So if your car is MY2006-MY2009 then you can install the Sirius trunk module.

The really bad news is that BMW no longer sell the trunk tuner brand new, only refurbished and only if they are in stock.

Generally, we refer to that as "lurking." "Trolling" is something completely different.

Technic, they changed the price of the stand alone module as well. Checked with Circle BMW and when they put the part number (65 12 9 192 274) in the system this is what they get. There are no other part numbers for Sirius Tuners for 2008 e90s. It is either a pricing mistake by BMW USA or that is what they decided to do going forward. Either way, it is out of their hands at Circle but they would let me know as soon as something changed.

I would go the Sirius Tuner route but do not like the mounting options. Cost to do the aftermarket Double Din is steep. Especially using the Janus Kit. Do not like the Metra Kit or any of the single Din options. Guess I will keep using the app on my iPhone and listen to it drop at the same spot every day on my way to work.

As for the ones listed on EBAY, they don't have the same part number so I am not sure if I want to gamble. Anyone know which PNs are safe for an 08 E90 Sedan (module only)?

EDIT: I just realized your were stating the same thing I was up top. It must be that the tuner is built into the radio but Circle did not tell me that. He said he hadn't sold any in a while but his part number is the same as it was last time he sold one. I should have ordered from him in September because that was when I got a quote from him and he had the tuner in stock at the time.

Just ordered the parts to mirror the Starmate DIY on the boards. $150 bucks for more functionality than the OEM headunit + ala carte + being hideaway is a done deal. I'm a stickler for clean installs and even I am going that route.

I was just told by my dealer:
For my 2009 328i SAT prepped car,
That they need to replace the radio for SAT even though the car is SAT prepped.
$1300 PLUS programming... So they're estimating $1500.
Does anyone have any info on this?
They told me that my DIN would not support SAT and they must replace the complete unit.
(I put in a call to BMWNA on this. We'll see what happens).
