Oil Consumption Issue.

Hey all,

Would oil consumption of a 2006 325xi be normal if I was required to add a quart every 2000 miles? Is this normal or maybe indicative of a leak somewhere?

tks

I called the dealer and he mentioned that such consumption is normal. BMW states that the consumption rate of 0.7L per 1700km is acceptable.

He also mentioned that the oil they use is Castrol 5-30 but also long as a good alternative engine oil is used within the specifications in the manual, no need to buy the BMW stuff.

they say it's normal, but I don't think that is common to burn that much. Every motor will burn a little, and maybe a bit more if you drive the car hard. My old integra with 250,000 miles burned about a quart every 2500 miles, and I drove that car pretty hard. My e90 hardly burns anything - less than a quart in 7000+ miles (but I really don't drive it that hard).

manufacturers will have limits on oil consumption before they will pay the dealer on warranty to spend time and money on investigating oil consumption - i guess the 0.7 ltr/1000km could be that limit

there's three oil consumption possibilities
- a leak
- normal wear leading to blue smoke
- closed crank case ventilation.Wheras old cars had the breather routed to the bottom of the car and into atmospheric pressure, ccv has it hooked up to the throttle body or turbo intake, with lower than atmospheric pressure. It does take oil out of the engine, see the oil catch can threads.

Nope. I'm sure he means 700ml or 0.7 of a litre. otherwise, 0.07L is only 70 ml.

I don't want to....but I'm not "burning" any oil, I check my oil level every week and I change my oil every 5000 Km. I have 105000 km... anyone else here not burning any oil ? I just think that is not that normal to top your oil between oil changes ( 7500 Km )...

'06 325i here burns a qt every 8000 mi and I have 120,000mi on my car. A qt every 2000mi is excessive in my book. It could be a valve cover gasket. Seems to be common on the N52.

I have 62,xxx km on my car. I change the oil every 8,000 km or so. Seems like it doesn't burn any oil at first (0.25 L over first 3,000 - 4,000km). After that, it seems burn about 0.25 L every 1,000 - 1,500km.

I think part of the issue is the cold climate here.

thanks to all for your comments. I plan to monitor the oil usage in terms of kms and report back. I filled the oil the 5th of January at 35,350km so we'll see how far she goes.

there has been few cars what where leaking oil at the crankshaft seal (gearbox side). Problem normally comes when the engines breather is frozen or partically frozen. The seal pop's off when there comes pressure to the crankcase. I'm only talking about cold countries and N52 engines . (sorry my english)

Just as an update. I travelled 1600km and the oil is still at the maximum level. True, I accidentally put in 5w40 rather than 5w30 but no problem so far. We'll see when I get an oil change later this month and make sure they top it off.

How do you check a N52s oil level?
