Cleaning winter mat w\ carpet...

Anyone else order a set of rubber winter floor mats, only to find out that the driver's mat has a strip of carpet where you're heels would be while driving? At first I thought it was a nice touch, didn't think too much about it...now it's dirty.

Normally I'd just hose off the rubber mats in the winter and be done with it. Any tips for cleaning the mats with a strip of carpet? I don't necessarily want to soak the carpet, do I?

Maybe vacuum the carpet part first, then hose off, and leave in my garage to dry (not in the actual car as there may be odours?).

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks y'all!

Do you have a shopvac? If so, then just clean the carpeted part like you would any other carpet--you can use soap or a specified carpet cleaner--and then just vac it all (dirt, soap, water) off at the same time. This has always worked well for me!

I don't think you'll hurt the carpet section by hosing it down with the rest of the mat. Do a thorough and deep vac first and if you have a wet/dry vac I'd probably want to extract as much water as possible before you let it air dry like dmboone suggests. Also, if you're going to hose it down you might want to treat it with Resolve of Folex first and take a good stiff nylon bristled brush to work that in. You'll want to remove all of the soap before you let it dry as any residual soap actually attracts and shows dirt again much quicker. Rinse it out thoroughly. If you don't have a wet/dry vac get a clean bath towel and lay it on the carpet section and stand on it to wick as much of the clean water off. Vacuum again with a clean brush attachment to bring the nap back out and let her dry. Should be much better after that.

The carpet used for these mats is quite durable. I pressure wash the carpeted mats all the time with good results.

my mats are all rubber (from BMW). I had that carpet thing on my Volvo and hated it. Defeats the whole idea of hose out mats.

As an aside, I just assumed when purchasing rubber mats from my dealership that they would be all rubber. Had I known about the carpeted strip, I would have ordered elsewhere.
