Cool Future Turbo Systems

Just curious to see what you guys are expecting/hoping to see in future turbo related products for the N54. Maybe we could make a list and if there is enough intrest a company such as AMS or Boost Logic will pick up on it and begin developing products for our cars if they aren't already. I know AMS and a few other companys are producing upgraded twins but I personally would like to see a single turbo manifold with a medium-sized billet turbo, external wastegate with seperate dump tube (aka screamer pipe) and non-reduced exhaust piping from the turbine to the muffler.

What do you guys think? Sure it would be slightly laggy, maybe full spool by 3000-3500 rpm, but high rpm power would be phenomenal!

Also I don't see why controlling the wastegate with a boost controller either standalone or intergrated with the JB3 would be so hard. Also about the fuel issue, if we can run 18psi with stock turbos why would we need to upgrade the injectors/fuel pump to run 18psi with a larger turbo? I know the cfm will be greater on the larger turbo but as long as we have a target A/F ratio and our pressure sensor is working I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Because my understanding is more air is being pushed into the cylinders at 18PSI with a bigger turbo. Your A/F ratio only matters inside the cylinders. And if more air is getting in there, even more fuel is needed to maintain stoic. Someone correct me if i'm wrong here.

Boostlogic and other companies won't do anything for this vehicle until someone comes up with a solution to the fuel issue and a method for putting a bigger snail on. It'll be years before they touch this car. AMS is one of the few being proactive about this engine when it comes to attempting to put a single on.

whoever does come up with with a fuel system upgrade will make a killing. they can sell it for a high mark up and people will pay.

aren't audi's/vw's DI motors too? They've had turbo upgrades for a while now. Is there a considerable difference between these systems?

+1. Boostlogic began developing turbo parts for the E36 chassis but once Blaise left, they quit the project. For some reason I doubt they will develop anything for the 335i. I believe AMS will find the fuel pump issue, and build some sick turbo kits.

A GT35R kit for the N54 would be awesome!

I hope they figure out the fuel problem.
Maybe after my warranty is up in 4 years a turbo kit will be out.

a FP HTA gt35r would be the tits on a n54, I think i'm eventually going that route with my 35r on my e36.

HTA = quicker spooling and more power than regular 35r, doesnt get better than that!!!

OR

maybe a new Precision 6262.....also a very good turbo

Borg Warner has recently stepped up their game too I hear.

Yep, a few turbo upgrade kits out there. They also have 3 different aftermarket fuel pumps. I think Audi came out with a revised fuel pump too.

I keep saying: methanol injection is likely the easiest way to solve the fueling problem.

Yep. Only a few out there..it's what ICS was running on their bumble bee. Wanted a manifold that I wouldn't have to upgrade when I went built engine + meth..

+1

New headers
off the shelf single turbo (35r would be nice...)
ball bearing
all connections (water and oil)
shorty intake
DPs, 2-part with swappable end piece that can adapt to sock exhaust

I'm not worried about the fuel system.
If we can support 550 whp with stock fuel system + meth (like ASR), then that's plenty.

I spent quite a bit of time looking under my hood last week. It appears that using a liquid to air intercooler would make life easier. It would allow shorter charge pipes (better throttle response) and a less restrictive intake design (air intake could be routed to the lower front left of the bumper as you look at the car).

With regards to the fuel system, with such a high CR, I think methanol should be mandatory for anything over 400whp.

Saw these over on the "other" forum, from RBTurbos, Rob Beck...

Don't ask me about them, I know nothing!!! just linking to their photos...

This means that nothing will be plugged off, no custom lines needed anywhere. From day 1 it was my intention to use a setup that keeps the car as it was designed originally, and that is what has been done.

They are the biggest you can really fit into these housings, there just is not ample wall thicknesses to go any bigger. Therefore I tend to believe they are the biggest ones out there in stock housings. Each turbo flows ~27.5lb/min, so ~55lb/combined. Good for a theoretical 550 hp, compared to the stockers theoretical 400 hp. I believe they are plenty enough to max out the turbine housing limitations, so if you want more you will need to wait for a complete overhaul to the entire turbo(charger) system.

Hope that helps answer your question. I am not yet anywhere near the point of pricing publicly or anything like that, as there is still much work to do (namely with the installation and testing/proving, followed by the wastegate upgrade retrofit). But I can say that if all goes to plan it will be sub $3k for the setup.

....

bnk, I can say the inlet is ~ 1.625". So after you consider tubing wall thicknesses to around .060", using 1.75" tubing would likely fit these beautifully.

Thanks,
Rob
