UPDATE: Yes. The only thing that will break here is video playback and PlugIn, both of which would have required a kludgy solution involving the extension cable-style Lightning adapter and running your iPhone 5 into the connector built into the 4/4S Media cradle anyway. Not only would I expect most people not to be interested in that, but it probably doesn't even apply to most people since few people probably have BMW Apps and the 4/4S Media cradle anyway. I did, but I sold it after hardly ever using it, and NEVER used it for video playback or iPod Out other than to check it out once.

But the Lightning adapters will enable analog audio, which explains why they're more expensive than the full Lightning to USB cables.

That Bluetooth profile is going to be added in iOS 6 (coming out this coming Wednesday) and should therefore be available on every iPhone back to and including the 3GS.
The IOS 6 Beta 3 both Messages & Emails worked in the BMW iDrive (Navi) with the iPhone 4S, but then the emails stopped coming thru with IOS 6 Beta 4, but messages still worked.

I have now loaded IOS 6 GM and the email side still does not work with iDrive, clearly there is a bug since beta 4 and is still in the latest IOS 6 release which will be on the iphone 5 as well.

Clearly BMW have not been on top of this and there has been numerous threads about this email bug.

But again, the presence of a DAC in the Lightning adapters hasn't been confirmed; different media outlets are currently saying different things, and no one has cited an authoritative source. My predictions are based on the pricing of the adapters being higher than the full Lightning cables (suggesting that the adapters are packing something extra) and the assumption that Apple won't want to ship an adapter that doesn't provide the function that the vast majority of its customers will want to use it for.
Great. Well I dont need video play back on my iDrive....., so I might actually go and order the thing. If it doesn't work, I will just return the thing and go back to my 4S...

On the other hand I am going to end up spending $100 on stupid adapters....

If it worked in Beta 3 and not since, how is it BMW's fault? Unless other phones other than iPhones are having problems, then it is Apple's fault...no?

Please be more specific. Are you saying that the enhanced Pandora and iPod interfaces (displayed on the iDrive display) do not rely on iPod out?

That IS an analog video signal, just like video playback of videos in the library. As I've repeatedly posted above, I expect the only impact of this change will be breakage of video playback and PlugIn, aka iPod Out. The rest of BMW Apps will be unaffected and has nothing to do with iPod Out/PlugIn.

But I can understand your confusion since a lot of media outlets saw "iPod Out" as not supported on the product pages for the Lightning adapters, assumed that meant analog audio, and immediately predicted the death of analog audio from the new iPhone even with an adapter. That's probably why the Lightning adapter pages have been updated to explicitly state that analog audio will be supported, and "iPod Out not supported" has been replaced with "Video output not supported".

And now, in the interest of minimizing the amount of incorrect information in this thread, I mean this in the kindest way possible, but could you delete your post? At that point I'll delete this one that quotes it.
I don't mind being wrong, so it might be worth while to leave at least some of this here

For the sake of clarity, can you tell me if the enhanced Pandora interface is part of the iPod Out functionality? That's what led me to believe I had iPod Out working. I use Pandora a ton, so that's really the only part that I'm worried about, but it would be useful for me to understand whether that is going away. I love seeing the album artwork and such when I'm using Pandora. I also think it's a lot safer to control Pandora through iDrive than it is to look down at my phone.

I think I found something really helpful that will assist others in understanding what *exactly* iPod Out is. This video shows the interface you'll see with iPod Out. Fast forward to 03:54 for the iPod Out portion.

Here's a screenshot:

So that, specifically, is what you're missing without a cradle, and what will *not* work with the Lightning to 30-pin adapter. Everything else (including Pandora with interface integration) works over USB.

iPod Out only describes the iPod interface you screenshotted. Everything else is USB raw data that's interpreted by iDrive. iPod Out is a problem because that entire interface is actually rendered on the iPhone itself and output as a video signal (same with video playback), whereas everything else as you correctly state is a digital USB data signal.

Bottom line: If the function doesn't work WITHOUT the Media cradle, it won't work with the iPhone 5, even using the Lightning extension cord adapter. If it works over normal USB, it will continue to work over USB with the iPhone 5.

Depends on the iPhone model and your vehicle options. If you have 6NR (BMW Apps), a snap-in adapter (goes in the armrest), and an iPhone 4S or older, you can play video while parked. Otherwise, no, you can't.

Video won't work over USB. The snap-in adapter has an additional connection that allows the iPhone to output video directly to the iDrive system. This connection is separate from the USB wires, so it won't work over USB alone.
