New Ride - 2011 328 M-Sport ... first 6MT

Big change for me. First a little background:

I am coming from a 2008 335xi (step) to a 2011 328i Msport 6MT.

The 335 was totaled about 2 months ago (see pic below) and like most on here I there was not really a whole lot of question as to what I would get next, just a question of what BMW. Problem was I needed something fast, well that didnt happen. I looked at a couple of CPO'd 335s and some new cars at various dealers and I decided I just wanted to get exactly what I wanted so I ordered.

I talked to Ryan at Steve Thomas and he was a huge help. There's no doubt I will be ordering from him next time around, but time and convenience were major factors this time around and I got my CA I leased the 2008 from to come close to matching Ryan's numbers (although not quite, and with a lot more headache).

The last manual car I drove on a public road was an e46 M3 'vert back in 2004 (aside from BKR335's 335 a couple months ago, but that was just a parking lot), and before that the manual cars I have driven were not numerous ... but I knew that's what I wanted. Anyway, with zero practice I went to the dealer to take delivery late Tuesday.

Still have a lot of work to do getting that 1st gear down, but in less than 2 days I know I made the right choice joining the 6MT club ... if a little late.

Below are some quick pics of the old car, the demise of the old car and the new car (and a co-worker's car, I would obviously prefer).

I have OEM Performance Grills ready to go on, tints are happening tomorrow and painted reflectors are next. Once I get used to the 6MT CDV delete and either AA or PBX are probably next. Interior is Chestnut/Light Burl. Its a great combo, the chestnut really brings out the red in the wood and it all ties together perfectly with the anthracite headliner.

I will post more/better pics, plus interior pics once I get the Grills and tint, as well as some more detailed impressions. I can say right off the bat, the biggest thing I miss from my 2008 (other than the N54) is Comfort Access. I did not realize how convenient that was. I guess the new iDrive makes up for it though.

Congrats on your new 328i. I am just curious, why did you decide on 328i after 335i. Most people would upgrade. 'Anyhow, I am my second E90 and happy with it. As with standard BMW, my first E90 was manual and it was easy to drive. Specially starting at uphill with 3 seconds delay. You don't have to worry hitting the car behind you.

Please elaborate on "paint the reflectors" (the orange ones on the sides of the bumper right?)
I want to do something to these orange reflectors too in my 328.

West German, nice. That's where I got my CPO. Who was your sales rep?

Also, how has the decrease in power felt? Does 6MT allow you extract enough power to make it feel somewhat close to a 335i A/T or is it not even close?

Sorry, that's as far as I read. I prefer the stories where people "go to an M3" from a 318i, etc.

LOL

AWD auto transmission to RWD 6MT is a pretty big transition, although I know what you mean. I went from a bigwheel to the space shuttle endeavor, so, you know, my thread on that was pretty baller.

Financial mainly. I had some "assistance" with the previous 335, we recently bought a house and as it is my wife thinks its irresponsible to spend this much on a car now, but I did have options for the same price to get a 335 .... one was a 2008 CPO almost identical to my previous car except 6MT and the other was a 2011 but would have had no options other than ZSP. I really wanted LCI, M sport and pretty loaded options-wise and it was either stripped or CPO if I went 335.

"Painted reflectors" are a pretty common mod to e90-LCIs and e92s to get rid of the ugly orange ones. You can get them through many vendors on the post (this is the cheapest I have found: http://www.wstoshop.com/servlet/the-...E92-LCI/Detail)

Brian Gustie - he is actually at the CPO lot. No it isnt that close. But as BKR said its just so different. The xi + A/T together really put you far from the engine. That change in involvement is really every bit as tangible as any car magazine or post on here claims. Again I am still not polished on 1st gear but man is it sweet after that.

Congratulations, it is beautiful!

For me, I don't consider it a "downgrade" at all like most people do. I'd easily be able to go back to a 328 6-speed if something happened to my 335.

And I love that "West German" badge that your dealership puts on their cars. The first time I saw one, I thought it was for some kind of performance parts. I usually hate all badges, but I like that one.

Nice ride. I have the Chestnut interior with Space Gray myself. They work very well together and I like that not a lot of people go with the Chestnut. Feels more luxurious and exclusive.

Blowing the minds of 335i owners by "Downgrading" your horsepower.

Sweet looking ride. Has anyone ever went "M" instead of Turbo?

I thought of that very car for a e91 and doing a euro delivery.

Good luck with it. Been a long time but have to have the wife buy in on it or its just another arguement waiting to happen.

THe power on the 328i MT is pretty good. I would not have a 328i in Step as the torque convert does rob it of power, but 335i in step is pretty lame in my book. LIke playing a video game in "beginner" mode. When you get familiar with the 328i you can have a lot of fun with it.

Awesome ride, congratulations! And welcome to the 6MT club.

I was in a very similar boat ... got a 6MT car, went to the dealer with 2 hrs experience behind a 5 speed Chevy. Scared the shit out of me at first - I had to drive in a traffic jam with my new BMW for an hour on the way home, up a f*cking hill.

1st ... yeah it is tricky. I rev to 1500RPM, let off the clutch and pause briefly at the grab point, applying more gas as I let it out. Gets off smooth almost every time.
Dunno how the 328 is, but I can no-gas launch really easily. Getting comfortable with no-gas launches really improved my launches.
I rarely ever shift before 3500RPM w/ 1st + 2nd gears. Car seems to like that number for some reason (just the way the revs fall).
/babbling

Almost went to WG to get my BMW, but ended up going to Devon Hill because a co-worker knew people there. WG was very professional with me and I'd recommend them as well.

Congrats again. I like your mod list.
Edit: Oh and CDV delete is totally worth it. I just had mine done, so much easier to launch smoothly. Also no hesitation shifting at higher RPM.

Hey man I think I just saw your ride ... were you just driving by Plymouth Elementary school? Saw you at the 4-way intersection just ahead of it.

Congrats OP. I love those M sport wheels. I just went the other direction, up to a 335i and I couldn't see myself ever changing back. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying it is better or worse, just my 2 Lincolns. Hope you have better luck with this one!

I thought the same thing! I was leaving the gym one morning and there was a white 7 series with it...I drove around it four times trying to make out what it was, then googled it! I think I'd still take it off...I'm kind of surprised bmw lets them do that.

this is the thing I miss the most about my 328!!! I got more compliments on that combo...even from the salesmen at BMW dealerships!

Your color combo was my 2nd choice, but I wound up going with my 1st choise (AW/black) because white is cooler here in the sunny south. Yours will hide dirt better, though.

Although some don't like the M-sport package, it's one of the features that I really like about my car. I've received a lot of compliments about the wheels, the stance, and interior on my car in the few short weeks I've had it.

As for picking a 328i vs. 335i, it's a matter of personal preference. As long as you went for a 6MT car with sport, it's a good combo. Enjoy!
