Ignition coil numbering and DIY

Need help with finding coil number 6 to replace. Auto zone diagnostic said that its misfiring. I bought a set of new plugs but I'd prefer not spending all day trying to figure out which coil. Any help much appreciated.

the coil number six would be the last one (1,2,3,4,5,6) but the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4

changing them out is easy just the # 3 and 4 are a little tight because of the Valvetronic Motor but easy REF section 120-11 and 020-25 in the Bentley Repair Manual

My coil #1 went out at 65k miles.. Got it replaced at an INDY for $100 straight.. How much would it cost me if I diyed it? And are there any diys anywhere that have pictures and are made for dummies?

It's so simple. You just need the tool. Gotta remove the air filter and all others in it's way. Prolly 15-20min to get to if you aren't rushing. Then about the same to put parts back together. Cost is just the ignition coil and/ or spark plug then the tool if you don't have the bolt size and/length.

Cabin Micro-filter housings, upper and lower removing (Section 640-19 to 640-21 in the Bentley manual.)

Open hood them remove upper micro-filter housing screws. Then lift off


Right side, un-clip e-box cover and detach rubber lock tab and lift off, Detach AUC sensor and wire from lower micro-filter housing and lay to the side.
- left side brake fluid reservoir cover. remove is similar.


Unclip locking taps from engine wiring loom cover and take off cover.


Remove wiring over edges


Reach through wire loom opening with plastic prying tool, and unclip engine wiring loom cover from underneath micro-filter housing


Working ar left side of housing , removing housing hold-down screw (A) and detach rubber lock tab (B), repeat for right side.


Slide housing forward and up to remove.


To install just reverse

Engine upper cover (Ignition coil cover) removing. (Section 020-25 in Bentley Manual)

Remove cover fasteners and left up cover.


your should engine bay should look like this mins the coils removed.


Ignition Coil Replicating (Section 120-11 Bentley Manual)
unlock ignition coil connector, pull connector off coil.
Pull rod-shaped coil straight out of spark plug hole.

Yes, extremely helpful, I'm in the same boat! - update - I moved the coil and of course the misfire moved with it. Have the new part and will install tonight. Thanks again to you guys on this thread, it was a real help.

updating the title to changing ignition coil thanks for the help. Anyone with this issue should really consider DIY over INDY.

lol you don't have to do ANY of that, just grab the engine cover pull up to remove it, slide it out and then you will have limited access but you can remove the coils, I did this in the parking lot at the dealer when one of them went out with no tools, took me 5 mins.

And you'll completely wreck the soundproofing foam layer under the engine cover when you force it back on...

Nope my car doesn't have any foam under, even if it did it wouldn't wreck it.

Only cars in the US that have foam is the 335i's the fuel system is very noisy on that car (direct injection).

There is no forcing of anything it comes out easy on my car, just lubricate the rubber grommets on the engine cover and it slips right back on nice.
