Bleeding Brakes!! 335d

Just fitted big brake kit (calipers and discs), front and rear and am having problems bleeding the brakes. Won't bleed the traditional way. The pedal goes flat to floor then begins to get pressure when pumped. Will it need pressure bleeding or am i missing something obvious?

I dont know, but I am subscribing here for posts from whomever does know or please post again when you figure it out. I wouldnt think the brakes would be any different from any other e9x series, so there should be a DIY in that section.

Searched the diy's and nothing clear. Have read about activating the dsc/abs unit??

The brake fluid did drain out at one stage as a brake line broke in process, which lead to dsc failure message. This dosn't show when re starting the car however.

Could the fact the brake fluid dropped be causing me bigger issues??

Do you have a power bleeder? Did you do it in the correct sequence if you using the pedal method? Which kit did you get - interested to see what you're running on the D.

If you can wait I suggest getting a powerbleeder. If you cannot wait for them to be shipped have your car towed to a shop and get a rental for the day. Sorry for your situation, I hope it ends the best way possible.

Used pedal method. Think i'm going to take it to the garage round the corner to pressure bleed the system, but don't see why this is different to traditional method?!

Its this activating the abs bit thats confusing me as read about it but surley i won't need to take to a dealer to bleed??

Kit is a PB kit 380mm drilled/ grooved 8 pot on front and 380mm 6pot on back. (Kit from singapore, apparently same parts as d2 and alcon) Calipers powdercoated in white. bit of a risk on the kit as not that well known but price ok. Will post pics/ reviews once done as well as pics of car.

You said one line drained down. This will require pressure bleeding and may need the ABS system bled as well, which requires a GT1 or Autologic. The Bavarian Technic tool may do this as well, dunno.

You do have the calipers on the car with all the bleed nipples facing up, right?

Are you running stock 18" or 17" wheels? How is clearance?

I replaced all 4 calipers earlier this year and I had no surprises. The lines drip fluid VERY slowly so there's no problem with taking a caliper off, taking your time to fit and connect the new caliper, without risking depleting the reservoir.

The only time you should have issues is if you deplete the reservoir, after this, you'll need some RF pressurization to clear air out of the system, but if you never let it get empty, you can avoid having to do this.

OP, have you fully bled the new calipers and tightened the bleeder screws? If shut and pressurized, the pedal shouldn't be going flat. Maybe you have air in your system?

Ha, the second person to ask if i've fitted them the right way up!

Think i will take it to a garage with autologic in morning to be on the safe side.

Pretty sure the range rover place i used with my previous RR had autologic (RR was bmw based). These guys are just round the corner and good guys. Is it likely that a range rover specialist will have the required autologic system??

I have oem m3 wheels in 19"s. Clearence is fine but 19" is the smallest wheel that can be fitted with this kit. Kit was acatually very well made and perfect fitment.

A line twisted so had to be replaced so resevoir drained which is why i think i have the issue, so i do think i have air in the system and poss in the abs module. Yes everything is tight, been checked several times. It goes flat then pumps up suggesting air.

Yep, I believe you need to hook up a tool (would expect autologic to work, BT works I believe) which sends a signal to the DSC module to pulse the brake system in a certain way to get all the air out. Good luck.

Each vehicle software package is purchased separately for Autologic. So even if they have it and use it on Rover, they would need the BMW software as well, approx $8000US additional per software package.

Didn't need the software in the end. Just a pressure bleeder and bleeding the back nipples on the calipers.

A bad pic;

brakes are super sharp and look great although difficult to tell in photos!

Will post some better pics / reviews once done a few miles.

bleeding refers to removing all the air trapped in the brake fluid as to allow the brake pedal to be firm
Having air in your lines is unsafe and will cause your brake pedal to feel mooshy because air can be compressed and liquid(brake fluid) can't be compressed

Its early days really and not much chance to test yet, but fit was very good, looks superb and very sharp, really throws you forward where as old set up just didn't have the bite!! Sure it will need a while to bed in as yet also. Price i thought was good, although customs trying to charge me more than i thought but i have challenged so awaiting answer.

Service was good and all in all can't grumble. Not a brake expert however!!

Still alot of money all in but the complete set up cost the same as some front set ups i've seen!!
