REVIEW: APEX studs/Motorsport Hardware lug nuts
REVIEW: APEX studs/Motorsport Hardware lug nuts
I purchased these 2 during 2013's Black Friday sale. Ordered 90mm APEX studs through their website, came with silver lug nuts. Ordered Neochrome open-ended lug nuts from Motorsport Hardware from kaliboy on the forums. He hooked it up with the price! The studs were installed with blue Loctite instead of red, since that's all I had. But they've held up to about 4000 miles, at least 4 or 5 wheel removals and retorqued. Their products do the job. These pictures show them flush only because of the low offsets and spacers high 20's and mid-teens. Without offset and spacers and your offsets are in the 30's, the studs poke out by like an inch or so. A regular paint brush will be your friend cleaning the hard to reach parts and a black sharpie for the chips/scraps on exposed black studs. |

this looks awesome. Now is the stud conversion a one and done for a while type thing? or does it need to be re-torqued often? Looking into doing this but I wanted to know if it would cause more harm than good. Sorry for noob questions :/

The studs and lugs should be replaced yearly.

Some say replace yearly, but I doubt that's necessary. Just retorque the studs once in a while.
I recently installed some on the rear (not Apex) and thought they were good. Used red Loctite and so on, but the next day I took it to a tire shop to have new tires put on. On 3 out of 5 studs on each wheel, the stud came out with the lug. So they put more loctite on and re-installed them. Then I needed to roll the fenders because of bigger tires. So the next day I removed the wheels and again, 3 out of 5 studs came out with the lugs on each side. Basically first 3 came out and the last 2 stayed because the wheel was holding them in. So for now, I've just removed them until I have more time to clean them up and re-install. I'm thinking I didn't leave enough time for the loctite to set and there was some leftover grease/oil from the packaging on the threads. I would definitely check/retorque/check several times after initial installation. |

true, others have a tendency of having studs coming out with their lug nuts by an electric tool, I don't have an electric drill so i carry torque wrench and simple tools in the car regardless. I just usually hand tighten them if I feel like it. But after 10k miles in the past 5 months, I haven't had a single issue. Yearly thing, I'll just clean them up, inspect them, reinstall. If I need a new stud i'll just buy singles. I guess they're like $3-5 each? I'm not sure but good investment regardless.

One major benefit is that you can easily install your wheels. Wheels also don't necessarily need to be hubcentric any longer, although it's definitely recommended.
