Can you get power from the cig-lighter with ignition off?..

I generally use a little car vac to clean the car, powered from the cigarette lighter, but in my 330d it doesn't appear to be powered unless the engine is running

Is this the norm, or am I doing something wrong here?

i think firstly you should post your question in the right section and secondly i dont think its a technical question more common sense or trial and error.
also it may be worth asking does the vac work with the switch on or off on the plug socket.

it doesn't work unless when the engine is on, or when it is in ACC mode. You probably wouldn't want to run a vac with the engine off anyways.

Thanks, not just me then. Bit inconvenient to be honest as I tend to leave stuff on charge in the car overnight too, but obviously won't be able to in this.

Sorry, clearly this wasn't intended for the classified section!

you could always rewire it, just need to find a permanent live rather than the ignition live its currently connected to.

Buy the adapter that turns the torch socket into a cig socket (always on) - job done.

Cig socket doesn't work unless the ignition is on. The centre armrest socket and the boot socket (if fitted) are also off without the ignition being on. Bit of a waste of time IMO.

Assuming you have a push button start, you can turn on the ignition without starting the engine and power-up the lighter socket. Put the key in and press the start button without pressing the clutch or brake.

Same reason radio switches itself off (nearly spoiled my romantic picknick today... might have to change battery).
