Could this be my AWD system acting up?
I tried to search but this question is really specific so I couldn't really find anything on it. First some background on the car:
Car: 2008 328xi Wheel/Tire size: Front 245/35/19 19x8.5 5x120 +35 offset Rear 265/30/19 19x10 5x120 +38 offset Suspension: H&R Coilovers (note: the rubbing noise occurred BEFORE lowering the car. the car is now lowered and the noise is still the same) Symptoms: After putting in the new 19" wheels, i noticed a LOUD noise at low speeds (closes description would be a rubbing sort ofnoise) - from a stop or when slowing down. Mainly first/second gear under 2500rpm. While the the noise occurs, it feels like the car maybe lightly braking like it has a restricted sort of feel. Once it hits about 2100 rpm it jerks a little then the noise goes away and the restricted feeling goes away as well. With stock wheels it never made this noise or jerked. Also, the low tire pressure warning light is on. The front wheels are brand new and the rears look fully inflated. Possibilities: Could it be the AWD system kicking it thinking the speeds of the front and rear are different because of the tire sizes? Or could it simply be rubbing? Just by eye, I don't see anywhere where rubbing may occur...and this restriction/jerking happens on flat surfaces not bumps. What I tried to do: My friend who owns a shop said the noise was due to cupping issues. I changed the front tires to brand new ones and the noise cut down by some, but still existed. He said the rest of the noise is coming from the rear tires. It's hard to narrow down where the noise is coming from, still sounds like its coming from the front and back...but after changing the front tires the noise wasn't AS loud as before. I attached a picture so you can see how the car sits with the suspension. Help would be very much appreciated, thanks! Last edited by kriscO; 05-11-2010 at 08:50 AM.. |

Could be rubbing, but also, the difference in overall rolling diameter for the front and rear tires are a bit too much. You need to make sure the tires are matched so the rolling diameter is very close to each other. Try 235/35/19.

I bought the wheels used with tires mounted on them already. The front ones are brand new and I don't want to waste them...could i just make the rears 275/30/19?

Running 275/30/19 rears would make the rolling diameter closer to spec but i don't know if that will make a big difference. However, running 235/35/19 front and 275/30/19 is the best setup which is below 1%.

I do think someone in the forum with a xi/xdrive car who has run 245 and 265 or 275, but I can't remember who.

The OP is posting about two separate issues:
1. Tire/Road noise 2. Staggered set up on an XI Outer tire diameter does not have anything to do with tire/road noise unless there's a clearance issue, in which case it should be pretty obvious. Outer tire diameter should have an issue with the awd system, unless there have been changes with it since the e46, I am not 100% familiarized with the e90s. |

I believe Phozenstone who has a e92 is running 245/35/19 and 275/30/19 setup. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=370502 I know a fellow local e90post member GregL was running 235/35/19 and 275/30/19 before he sold the car and mentioned this setup was closest to spec. |

Do yourself a favor and get the right tire sizes...
235/35/19 front 275/30/19 rear You shouldn't even need a fender roll because you're an e90 which has the wider rear fenders than the e92. Trust me, it's cheaper to buy a whole new set of tires (even ps2's like I bought for ~$1600) than to fix your grenaded transfer case...

The key is to keep the tire rotational lengths within 3% of each other. IE 235/35= 82.25mm sidewall and a 275/30=82.5 mm sidewall. That's a .3% difference which translates very minimally to the circumference of your tire. Meaning that if you were going to draw a line on the tires at exactly 12 o clock, that for one rotation of your front smaller tire, your larger back tire will be at about 11:59. Your current set up will have your back tire at about a difference of 20mm behind. or say 11:45... it will add up very quickly to the timing of the AWD diff slip.
Your current set up 245/35=85.75 mm and 265/30= 79.5mm, that's a 7.2% difference. Much larger. |

I have had the same setup on my car for 5k miles and have no problems. I don't anticipate any because this staggered setup is actually smaller in rolling diameter difference than the factory offered 225/40/18 and 255/35/18.

I goofed. I thought the original post said 245/35 in front that's why I asked about how long this was being ran but 235/35 in front and 275/30 in the rear doesn't surprise me at all that it's been problem free.

I'm not sure what the default offset is for an e90xi if there is any, but I do know that you cannot change the offset for your 4 wheel drive bmw. I have 19x8.5 chrome beyern wheels wrapped in toyo proxy t1r's for summer. When I purchased them the tire/wheel dealer called tire rack indianapolis to make sure what he was telling was correct. I couldnt have the deep dish beyerns either because of having four wheel drive. And the rolling diameter he told me couldn't be off by more than a millimeter, at the time I believe he said it was around .01% different. AND they were not legally allowed to sell me wheel/tire combinations that violated these proportions that were deemed unsafe by either the manufacturer or distributor. Hope this helps.
Ill throw some pics up whenever I borrow a camera and have a clean ride. |
