Critique my trunk setup idea

Just picked up a JL j2 500.1 and 10w6v2. Looking around for setups and decided to go with something like texas2009's setup:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...trunk+pictures

The amp will be the exact same setup.

My box will fire the same way (forward) and I'm gonna make the cutout behind the armrest. The box doesn't need all the airspace to extend from side to side fully, so I'm thinking of making hidden "wings" to fold back when I need the space.

As for the plexi on the sub box, I'm considering a "3" or maybe the BMW emblem like one of these...

I could either get the plexi etched or glue the MDF back on the plexi. Probably etched though.

Any ideas welcome!

You lose alot of your trunk. I had 2 15's with less room taken up.

My box will not take up as much room as the one in the pic and will also have the hinged "wings" I mentioned which can give me room on the fly.

Also, the zenclosures box looks cheap, and trunk space wasn't the question posed in the thread...

i take it this is a base boomer thingy... do you ever worry about your car rattling apart? Maybe you don't use for the low, hard notes.... but more for increased quality? I don't know much about this area of modding.

That's quite the loaded question. Start here:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-YL2nVQG...ofers_faq.html

The sub I've selected isn't boomy and can hit low frequencies and sounds "punchy". It isn't enough to rattle the crap out of the car. Also, many of the rattle setups are the cheap crap that people put in cheap cars.

Yeah, I know, I searched your threads before I commented. I don't see how that takes up less room than my proposed idea. My personal preference is that it looks bad, too. Not form shaped, not color matched, etc.

Guys, I'm going to build the box that I've laid out in the first post. Help with the etching ideas and comment on the "wings" or any trouble I can expect to run into please. I don't need to see generic boxes.

Not trying to be rude, just want some actual ideas/help...

I Like that idea alot, I would go for the JL emblem. I nearly did that idea, but like the look of the front of the sub sticking out more. This is my install

Nice and clean. I just want some blue or white LEDs for the "bling factor." Also I think a lot more sound will make it to the cabin if firing forward through the skipass than towards a sealed trunk.

The box will be sealed and not ported. I've never really liked ported boxes, and I think it will have enough boom firing through the skipass.

I wish plexi were cheaper so I could make a couple different designs to look at in person.

Looks good - I would agree that you essentially lose the trunk. OK I guess if you never use it, or will always have RFT's on the car with no need for a spare in the trunk...

All that ever goes in the trunk is a backpack & gym bag or golf clubs and maybe the occassional cooler. I'm making the box easily removable, so no worries.

For how much work that is, just get the SWS8's. I just put them in my car and its so much bass now its insane. From what guys were saying its not a huge difference, well its a HUGE difference. I have my amp on 1/2 gain, my bass at like 3 bars from the bottom, and my equalizer is set way down as well for bass. I will never not have enough now.... and i like bass.

As large an improvement as they are, SWS-8s still aren't as good as a good trunk mounted sub.

Honestly, i cant even crank the bass on full, i am scared i will blow the SWS out.

If i even set them pretty high, there is so much bass you cant hear the words anymore, its just boom boom boom.

How can you want more bass then that? Its not even music, its just deafening.
You would have to upgrade all the speakers if you want that much bass.

Just saying in case you wanted to save some trunk space and keep the stock look of everything. All you would see is a amp bolted to the back seat.

The guys that say the SWS is not that big of an improvement must either have a shitty amp, or poorly sealed sub.

It's not about volume, it's about clarity. More cone area means less excursion. Less excursion means the sub stays linear and sounds better. Plus, the SWS-8s really aren't very good sounding. They can play louder than the OEM "subs" but I wouldn't use them. Too many other good options, IMO.

I've had numerous trunk setups so far. I had 1 Alpine type s on 300 watts 2 type s's on 1000 watts and even two type r's on 1300+ watts, and I never broke the gas cover latch. All I did was put one layer of dynamat on the right side of the trunk.
