It should be part of the theory but it's not practical to make it practical.
Nearest motorway to me when I started driving was about 45 miles away, I still think everyone should be educated on how to drive on 3+ lane roads.
It was a confusing and scary trip down the M6 at rush hour the first time had to use a motorway.

Agreed but all you need is an IQ > 45 to understand the concept.

Keep left, unless overtaking.

Unless I'm missing something?

The same rule applies to lane three as it does lane two.
Just as it does in lane four.

100% correct, simple and fool proof even for the morons around us.

Driving was once courteous.. If I was in the middle lane and saw someone coming up the outside lane at speed, I would not pull out until they have gone past. If I was in the outside lane and someone in the middle lane was coming up to slow moving traffic, I would flash them out. These are the simple things where we can help each other out that keep traffic 'flowing'..

However, these days I have plebs pull out in front of me doing 65mph when I'm three car lengths behind them at speed meaning I have to brake hard. People don't seem to check mirrors any more and simply indicate and pull out..

People think the inside lane is for lorries only.

People pull into my 'saftey zone' between me and the car in front..

People in 1.0L Micra's sit on my rear bumper with half the stopping power that I have.

The above list could go on and on and on and on and on and on.... but I know our motorways will just get worse.

I would definitely apply for a job as a 'motorway control officer' that drives an unmarked car and hands out £80 fines to these plebs for not being able to use motorways properly..

Soon our motorway 'system' of inside lane, middle lane and outside lane simply wont exist and all lanes will plod along at the same speed..

.... and breathe

You all claim that motorway driving is a simple affair and anyone should be able to do it yet complain about others poor driving habits.

There's a lot of people out there with the belief that doing 70mph entitles them to sit in any lane they wish.
There's also the issue of lane changing. Just because there's a gap large enough for your car it doesn't mean you should just jump in it. It's the morons causing other drivers to brake that causes the majority of these tailbacks on motorways.

Educating people about their actions and the effect is has on the flow of traffic might help prevent some of these accidents that are all too common in rush hour congestion.

classic example was the astra that ploughed into the bck of my E90 a month ago.

he was far too close for most of the journey, i slowed down to maintain a decent gap in front of me. Still he managed to completely lose all focus, didnt pay attention, and when i slowed down for the traffic in front, he just kept going and smashed into the back of me.

his excuse "the sun was in my eyes"

to which i asked "do you think thats a reason to drive closer to me, or perhaps leave a bigger gap".

damn fool went quiet and gave me his insurance details.

plus.. them milk bottle top astra brakes, if i'd had to brake quickly, the distance he was at, he'd have stood no chance!

It's not just motorways.

I'm fed up of morons pulling out on me on roundabouts. One dick head did it to me today, I beeped him and flashed the cunt. Next roundabout he did the same thing and nearly got smashed by a van who also beeped.

Muppet!
