Your first consideration should be the type of enclosure. Each type gives different results. Some are for SPL, some for SQL, and some for pure SQ.

My zen closure is 12in single, non-ported and facing the rear. If I ran alpine type r 1242 I think and 500 watt alpine amp mrp-m500 I think, technic harness, am I ok? No plans of ms-8 or balancing out with other speakers.

I only recommend two types of enclosures/set-ups, purely for SQ. It's my personal preference, so keep that in mind.
1. Corner-loaded 2. Infinite Baffle (free air) Both are efficient, produce tight, accurate bass, with a fairly flat frequency response, and do not produce much rattling of the trunk panels. I have not tried IB in my car, but I know what such a setup is capable of, and it will be my next project.

You really can't go wrong with JL in my opinion. I hooked up a JL Audio CS110RG-W3v3 PowerWedge directly in the middle of my trunk against the back seats (ZCW is a nice bonus to access the amp w/o unmounting) and the gray carpet matches the trunk lining very closely, so depending on your install it can almost look stock. Since you want a double, I'd say go with CS210RG-W3v3-2 (but I can't vouch for how that one will fit).
The sub has a great balance of thump and SQ to me. Frequency doesn't go as low as I'd like, but I'm pretty sure that's a side effect of T-tapping the speaker-level sub wires as opposed to using the original signal. Also consider a sound deadening at the very least on the license plate and gas cap door, and maybe even on the trunk lid. If money isn't an object, JL also makes a stealthbox enclosure for our cars.. but it's an ungodly 1200-1300 i think :-/ And if you prefer to match your own subs and enclosures, well that a whole other conversation! |

So is it possible to design a corner enclosure so its considered good for SQL, or would you have to design something else, which would introduce rattles? (apart from IB)

A corner loaded speaker, or two, is quite capable of being "loud" if desired. I run 2 Soundsplinter RL-i 10s in corner loaded boxes and they produce an enormous amount of pressure in the car when needed but also blend seamlessly when turned down. I run a Zapco 500/1 to the pair. I have yet to have anyone leave my car unimpressed.

I already have a DLS A6 amp and im going to be adding a sub in the next few months. Im really liking the corner loaded method as i hate rattles. I've read the Soundsplinter website, plus some reviews on other forums, and it seems as though they are good SQL subs and are suited for small enclosures. The Soundsplinter website doesn't show up properly so can't really see what the differences, apart from power ratings, are between the RL-I, RL-P and RL-S series. Ideally i would like one 12 inch sub in a corner loaded enclosure that has good SQ but can also get reasonably loud, but don't need/like for it to break windows or cause rattles etc. This manufacturer does seem to fit the bill. Oh yeah would love to see pics as well. |

This is what the enclosure looks like. I've since relocated my amps for the meth and nitrous setup. I'll get some pics up sometime.

Thanks for the compliment! Enjoyed meeting you as well. I'm meeting with one of the guys I built a 12" enclosure for this weekend. I'll take some pics and get them to you.

Hey,
I know its nothing crazy but I went for a JL W3 10 inch and a JX 500 amp. Because I have a convertible I was limited due to the hatch pull down. I used the ski pass through so that the sub fires straight into the cabin and I love it Can never go wrong with JL.. |
