I like to put the jack stands under the differential but everyone seems to have different preferences. Quote:
I've never had a problem with that plastic box getting crushed and BMW's designed that plastic box to be crushed first before the steel frame (which would cause rusting). So that's why I've never used an adapter. If you don't have an adapter, I seriously wouldn't worry about it. Last edited by Andy M; 03-19-2010 at 06:58 PM.. |

i was about to get one of these when i chanced upon this review from costco in the US. i know it's a different brand but the construction is identical, which makes me think it came from the same factory. i hope forum members who had this jack for a while could chime in and shed some light on the build quality, please.

Well, I haven't had my jack for too long so I can't really comment in terms of leaking hydraulic fluid but for me it seems ok. And yes, they look like the same jacks but the Costco site has bad ratings, the CT site has good ones.
In my opinion though, I would NOT get this jack unless having a lightweight jack is something you need. If you have your own garage, where you can stow a heavier low floor jack, it's better to get something else. This jack needs a lot of pumps to fully raise the arm. My other jack (which I just sold today) is a 3.5 ton Michelin Speedy Jack. The 3.5 ton Michelin jack is much heavier at 97 lbs (which is why I had to sell it - moving to a condo in Toronto) but the construction is much more solid. Also, it only takes 3 pumps to reach its maximum height of 22". The Motomaster jack requires something like two dozen pumps. Also, it can't handle as much weight so if you were to do something later which required more lift, you'd need a new jack. So to actually raise your car, the Motomaster jack takes longer than the Michelin. However, the fact that the jack is so light is the draw (meaning it's portable). Anyway that's just my opinion on the jack. I have the Motomaster aluminum racing jack now but it's mostly because I really need something that is light. Otherwise, I'd probably stay with my 3.5 ton Michelin jack. Most of the price for the Motomaster jack is from more expensive material (aluminum vs painted steel). |

Odd, a few people on this forum have had theirs for a while, and I've not heard issues from them on it. The CT and Costco jacks do look the same... I hope mine doesn't end up leaking!
From what I recall, I didn't see any other CT jacks at the store that are low profile, besides this one. IIRC, you need to have the jack go as low as 4.5 inches to clear the adaptors under the 3 series with sport package. I don't feel like driving onto 2x4's every time. |

The aluminum jack is a good buy in my opinion when it's on sale, especially for condo dwellers or people with not enough room in the garage. Last edited by Andy M; 03-20-2010 at 05:58 PM.. |

thank you for the comments guys. good to hear that CT branded jacks work fine.
i found this video of an identical aluminum jack (different brand again) unboxing and demonstration on how it performs against the cross member (i think) under the engine. i'm impressed to see it in action, as well as the long handle and how light it is. |

That blue jack that costco sells is the same as the one at Harbor Freight. I saw in Motor Trend mag today that blue jack at Harbor Freight for 60$ on sale, regular 100$ which is what costco sells the jack for. I bet the one from CT and the blue one from Costco/Harbor Freight are identical. If it brakes, take it back to costco... lifetime warranty on anything there.
Im going to see if costco has it as i would rather buy from there then CT and get ripped off.

Just saw this on another forum:
"The princess auto jack is good(blue one). DO NOT buy the low profile mastercraft jack from canadian tire(red one), I've gone through 2 of them and Reggie has gone through 4. The mastercraft ones tend to fall and there is a linkage piece where the bottom of the handle meets the jack that likes to break." CT Jack PA Jack- also sold at Costco

my first time using this jack i didn't really know how it works. later i found out after the car is jacked up i'm supposed to rotate the bar to the right to keep it in place? then when i want to lower the car i rotate to the left the car falls down really fast, it was hard to control the speed.
is that the proper way to use it? |

Everyone referring to the PA one being the same as the Costco one, have you seen the jack at Costco Canada stores though? The link someone posted above was for Costco USA, and the Cdn site doesn't list it. The stores usually have different stock than the website, so I wonder if we might have it at the Costco stores themselves. |

ah man, i bought the Canadian Tire one on saturday, didn't realize costco has same one for less...ah well, it helped with my coilover installed tremendously
the worst thing about it is that its really hard to lower the jack slowly without having the car crash down on u, well not 'crash' down, but u know what i mean |
