xi tire sizes for 19" rims question

On Tire Rack, the recommended tire sizes for my 335xi with 19" rims is:

Front Optional 19" 235/35-19
Rear Optional 19" 265/30-19

I have read some posts that 275/30-19 is better for the rears as it is closer in diameter to the fronts listed above which saves wear and tear on the driveline. However, I have a lot of trust in the peeps at tirerack.com and I wonder if anyone knows a reason why they recommend 265 for the rear?

I'm thinking about the same sizes. I have been told that the concern is rubbing with a 275. I have a sedan which has more clearance than the coupe. I wonder if the pros could chime in as well.

[Not a pro, but anyways...] I think the likelihood of rubbing also depends on whether the car is lowered or not. XIs' wheel gaps are larger than the Is. It also depends on the specific tires' sidewalls, and the offset of the wheel as well, so it's not always the case that 275 is worse than 265. Personally, having matching diameters is most important to me, if it rubs, I'll roll the fenders.

I'm about a month away from my summer wheel/tire purchase. I was looking at the same dimensions. The sizing is only 0.3% difference between front and rear, and I understand you want to be less than 1.0%, so that works.

The 275's should work from a matching perspective as well (0.16% difference), but depending on offsest, I'd start worrying about rubbing.

Ditto here, I have 19's coming from Morr and I am on the fence with 265's vs 275's.

Anyone out there with a xi and 19's?

I have 19s with 235 and 265. I have not had any problems with over 3000 miles...

I'd recommend going with 18s if are you going to drop the car. I cannot turn my front wheels left or right all the way without rubbing the front of the tire wells.

I'm currently in the process of switching to 18's non-staggered all around. I did the 19's staggered for looks, but in reality we have an AWD car. We are SUPPOSE to have non-staggered setup.

I have 19's with 235 and 265. My fronts are 8.5 and rears are 9.5; The tires I purchased -- General Exclaims are great, both wet and dry traction is 100x better than my RFT's. When I purchase new tires I'm going to head the 245 and 275 direction because the tires are a little too 'small' for my rim; I wish I had gone that direction but you live and you learn.

If you're doing non staggerd setup for the AWD's I'd run 8.5 all around to be safe, and you might be able to go 9 inches without any problems all around. i.e. 18 x 9 and then run a 265 tire and you should be fine.

Can I assume you dropped your car? If so, did the front rub before you dropped it? Which tires are used? Thanks...

you can go either or.... 235/275 share the same numbers.... but many people go with 235/265.... some people that want 275 in the back go with 245 in the front.... i went with 235/275 setup and i have no problems with it...

Yes, I dropped my car with KW V3 coilovers. I installed the KW V3 at the same time I put on the 19s. I do not know if 19s would cause the same problem on a stock ride height xi.

To be specific the wheel/tire setup I have is:

Hyperblack CSLs 19x8.5 +35 F 19x9.5 +30 R with TPMS

General Exclaim UHP 235/35/19 F 265/30/19 R

I have 235 front and 275 rear. No issues on the xi. Not lowered yet. You can see the gap in pics in the link in my sig. It's pretty big. lowering is a must imo.

225/265's or 235/275's i'd be careful straying way from those numbers

You gotta have the same tire diameter so the AWD system doesn't get damaged from unequal rolling distance and then the transfer case has to slip to absorb the excessive difference.

It can burn out the transfer case and damage the cars awd.

So, you mean xi owners should only get non-staggered set-ups, but can get wider tires in the rear? Or, am I an idiot??

Non staggered set up is the recommended setup but staggered is ok too (look at the stock 18" 189s, they are staggered). However, the staggering does not provide any advantage over the non-staggered setup because you don't need wider tires in the back to provide better traction (as in RWD cars).

Conclusion: staggered setup on XI is mostly for looks and it is ok to do it, just stick with the 235/35/R19 front and 275/30/R19 rear for tires

Keeping 275 on the rear should be np, but will a 10" rear cause other problems? I could care less about the looks and am looking for the performance aspect more than anything else.

Thoughts?

Different widths (staggered) is fine. Different rolling diameters isn't.

So those pics are with 19's on stock suspension E90XI with 235f/274R? What are the offsets on the wheels and which tires are those?

I am running goodyear eagle f-1 assymetric 245/35 19's at all 4 corners with no issues and the handling improved greatly over the stock size tires. I am starting to think that it would be possible to run 255/35 19's at all 4 corners without any rubbing issues on an XI. I think you are better off staying away from a staggered set up.
