It's still to early in 2014, you are feeling the hit of your car being deemed another model year older. You would have to give it some time to wait for values to rebound and see what these cars are pulling. Probably would have to wait until Q2 or Q3 to get a better value. Plus there has been a body style redesign as well that automatically makes the older series that much less valuable

The used car market is tryna tricky. A lot of people hate on CarMax but for the most part the values are dead on for what the cars are worth to dealers. Most cars that CarMax buys actually goes to the wholesale auction and not front lot company makes it's money off auction sales not retail sales honestly.

People often try to tell a dealer to take a loss on a deal or only make $1,000 or two off a car and think they will accept it. First of all you lose because you mentioned numbers first. Secondly dealers are all about profit, they rather sell to someone that will lay down rather than to take a loss dealing with your deal.

It's a slippery slope because you have to make sure that as the dealer you don't overbuy a car. They may have been other cars on the lot they are priced way over what you got offered but it's no determination of how long those cars have been sitting there. Also like you said there are tons of 335s on the market with low mileage as well something to take into account that the market is saturated.

I would shop around and at least try to get your payoff for the car, remember it works like a sliding scale, the more you get for your car the less you get off the new one and vice versa.

Honestly you need to shop for the new car with a little more sawvy. Urrghhh I feel like I'm rambling so I'll stop now lol. But pm if you need help.

I work for a dealership and CPO'ing a vehicle can cost upwards 1k. I wouldn't be surprised if a BMW would go over 2k.

However, taking into account the year and your mileage, I would assume it would only need a couple hundred bucks to certify it.
Thanks for your input. Really appreciate it. Yeah seems like the El Cajon dealership I'm working with is willing to play the numbers game with me. It's just their CPO inventory isn't what I want for now. Maybe I'll just be patient and hope for something to come in soon. Thanks again!!!

Thanks for the input. You're right about the more I get for my car the less they'll take off the new car. I'll shop around and see what comes up in the next month.
If it wasn't for the wife's new purchase and putting down $6k there then I wouldn't be such a penny pincher on this purchase lol

Thanks!!

go to edmunds.com and look up your clean trade in value . . that is an accurate number . . then look at the invoice on the new and add $1000 or so profit . . its not rocket science . . and someone will take that deal . . people are often unrealistic about what their trade is worth.

Thanks. Will do. My numbers I look at are from what I here people on the forums what they're paying and also I look at the listings in my market. Just like looking at comps sales when purchasing a house. I look at all SoCal markets.

Thanks for the advice!!

Edmunds and kbb are not true values of what cars are worth, that's why they don't buy cars. They are accounting firms that attempt to use formulas to determine the worth. It's a good place to start but not set in stone as the value. The car is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Also don't cheat yourself adding to the invoice price, often times new cars are sold under invoice, especially new model years.

Thats exactly what I mean...use Carmax as a baseline. Negotiate with the dealers based on their offer.

Honestly it's all part of the buying/selling car game.. I had to walk out of the dealer 3 or 4 times and go back on separate occasions to negotiate until they finally gave me what I wanted on my trade in and gave me a killer price on my cpo car, just be patient

Thanks!! Yeah I guess like I've been saying it's the game we have to go through to get what we want. I mean they're not huge expectations just realistic numbers from the comps I've seen in my market. What did you end up getting?

Well this was when I first bought my 335.. I had a 2009 Lexus is250 fully loaded with 29k miles mint condition and they offered me 21k for it and I wanted 24k.. The sticker price on the 335 was 37k fully loaded besides m-sport package.. I wound up getting 23k for the Lexus and got the 335 for $31,500 which equated to my monthly payments being $356 plus BMW had an incentive program where they made my first 3 payments so I thought I got a pretty good deal at the time.. It did take me going there 4 different times to negotiate though

Wow. Great price and monthly payments. Plus those 3 payments you saved definitely could have gone to some mods. Right on!!

Simply go to Carmax. The dealership is the WORST place to trade in a vehicle. Private seller is best but it takes a lot of time out of your life and can sometimes bite you in the ass if you don't do it right. I've sold three cars to Carmax and walked away within 20-30 mins scot-free. Two of them were leases that they actually helped me almost break even without much extra $ on my end.

Thanks! Yeah carmax blows here in San Diego. Took my wife's mini in and they offered $20k. Went to dealer when we bought our Explorer and they have us $23600.
Many of my friends suggested carmax but didn't work for me.

Have you noticed that dealership over time is getting bigger and bigger. They are becoming super Giant Store and elegant at the same time. They know the car is worth more, but what they are trying to do is squeeze more money out of you. That's why you see at times that they are coming back and offering more. One of the main reason I like CARMAX. You get one and only one price, which you can take it or leave it. They don't bother you a bit.

I am so sorry, i know your car is worth more. If it's a 328i then i could have understood.
Beautiful color + car = should equal a decent resale value.

Also, the manufacturer are all trying to get the crown by dumping subsidized cars into the market adding more to the mix for the idiots that know very little about cars.

I agree with your last comment. I mean if I saw my car on a lot and I was looking for a 335 I so would get mine. It has all the good stuff lol. But not that many people know all about 335s. But hey, I didn't know much either but knew I wanted it over the 328.

Also worth taking into account is you are at year 3. Lots of leases are flooding the market via the auto auctions.

If you don't like what the dealer is offering sell yourself on ebay.

so you negotiated a used 335 price from 37,000 to 31,500? and got them to give you 2000 more on your trade? if so, great job man.
