Actually the 335d is only available in auto - so the whole left arm could go.

That is essentially the only reason why I am not driving a 335d.

BMW offer some puny excuse that the torque would make a manual gearbox explode

But there clearly ARE manual cars with greater levels of torque - so it CAN be done.

That said - with the torque of the 335d you don't really NEED to change gears.

I think they are practically giving away appendixes - since they have no actual use.

You might be able to get Damien Hirst et al to chip in for a thorax, but it's going to be difficult to enjoy a new car without one.

My suggestion is to grow your hair and sell it to the wig manufacturers.

Either that or go on the game.

That said - with the torque of the 335d you don't really NEED to change gears.

Our M3 manual had less torque than the 335d and its gearbox and clutch were similar to a truck and not the easiest to drive smoothly. The 335d also has more torque than the M5. The only other BMW engine to boast more torque (just, but at much higher RPM) is the 6.0 litre V12 also only available in auto.

Personally if a manual alternative had been available we would still have gone for auto. If you really want to mess about with the gearbox you've still got those paddles to play with.

Does the auto with paddles in the 335d actually hold onto a gear UNTIL you change it (i.e. does it act like an 'SMG' box rather than a full auto)?

needforspeed: afaik the auto box is like the SMG in that regard, the change up is up to you... but i'll confirm it when i get mine, unless someone else wants to?

Hmm... I'm not 100% sure about changing up, but I think it doesn't when you're in M mode. However, it does change down for you, which can be handy if you pull up at a roundabout and forget you're in M, but it can also be annoying because if you brake coming into a roundabout for example, the 'box might drop down a gear for you at the same time as you push the paddle to change down, and you end up dropping down 2 gears and losing count of where you are. Maybe I need to practise more, but I couldn't really get the hang of it, and now I only use M mode when I'm on fast straight roads - I find DS is best for tricky junctions, roundabouts, overtaking etc., and it does a pretty good job.

If you could stop it changing for you I could live with it. The step in my 530d was the same and as you say I ended up dropping or going up by 2 gears because the box tried to do what I wanted.

Please can I have a 335d with SMG
