Question Add Oil to a 2011 328i xDrive???

Hi all:

This question might have been answered already in the forum, so please apologize if so, but I searched and could not come with it, or at least not for my model/year...

Last year I bought a 2011 BMW 328i xDrive, and this month (10 months after), the navigation system indicated that Engine Oil level was at its minimum. Worried, I contacted the dealer, who simply mentioned that they could add a quarter of 5W30 (which I had to pay for) and it should be all set.

Now, I've never had to do anything like that with any other car in my lifetime; obviously old cars burn oil and that's acceptable, but mine is only 11K miles!!! and I'm not a crazy driver!

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? is this acceptable? would you think that there's something wrong with my car? any insights are really appreciated, since the more I think about it, the more uncomfortable I get ...

Thanks in advance,

Yeah these engines consume oil. Mine uses about a quart every 10k miles.

The dealer should fill it up for free. At least all the ones around my area do.

yes, burning some oil is normal, but i was surprised dealer is going to charge you to top it off, it should be free, but then, you can buy a quart of BMW approved oil for $8 - $10 and do it yourself, save some hassle to drive to the dealer.

The way I look at it is that your car is telling you you're overdue for an oil change...I personally change oil every 6 months which is about 7,000 km regardless of what the CBS says, and never had to add any oil...

It's got an engine. They use oil.

As was said in another post ALL cars use some oil. The difference here is the time between oil changes. Your other car most likely had the oil changed at 6000 or less. And I bet that the oil was at 1/4 to 1/2 a quart low at that time. The difference here is the BMW displays the fact on you dash. Remember when the message says low it is only 1 quart low. You still have 6 quarts in the engine
